Kevin Spradlin is easy to pick out on the long, winding road of life. He's probably the one running. Cross country running has been a late-blooming passion for Spradlin. And in a sense, he has seen the world by running across countries. Spradlin admits he's not the best runner, but he makes up for it with his dedication, enhanced by two stints in the U.S. Army. "I'm a runner who went to the military," said Spradlin, who attended South Hagerstown and Smithsburg before earning his GED in 1997.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Saying the facility could save on bills that cost Jefferson County about $1.4 million annually, county officials are studying the possibility of establishing an alternative to sending inmates to Eastern Regional Jail in Martinsburg, W.Va. Referred to as a "day report center," these facilities offer a chance for nonviolent offenders to serve their sentences through a program that offers GED training, anger management and alcohol- and drug-abuse counseling, Jefferson County Commissioner Dale Manuel said.

Vietnam War veteran Ray Linebaugh received his high school diploma amid a standing ovation this week. It was 46 years after his class, the Class of 1961, graduated from North Hagerstown High School. "It was very moving for me to get that diploma," Linebaugh said. "More than anything, it's self-accomplishment. " Linebaugh, 65, of 11935 Heather Drive west of Hagerstown, was 17 and had just finished his sophomore year at North when he decided to enlist. His much older brother, Bob, who had been raising Ray and another brother, John, in Hagerstown's West End since their parents died, had earned a Purple Heart while in the U.S. Army during World War II. John, who was about 10 years older than Ray, had served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. "So I decided to keep the family tradition and do my part," Ray said.
