SANDY HOOK -- Authorities searched the Potomac River Sunday from kayaks and a helicopter for a man presumed to have drowned after he fell in the river Saturday, a Maryland Natural Resources Police official said. Although it is believed Daniel Figueroa drowned in the river while fishing Saturday, authorities tried various ways Sunday of finding the Gaithersburg, Md., man, including looking onto the river from high points, said Sgt. Brian Albert. Conditions in the river were too treacherous Sunday to use divers, Albert said.

A Gaithersburg, Md., man claiming to be a doctor who had just left work at City Hospital was charged with first-offense driving under the influence following a traffic stop on W.Va. 9 at New York Avenue Friday, police said. After James Simmons was arrested, an inventory of his blue Honda Accord revealed a prescription bottle containing a razor blade, a straw and a small bag of white powder, which tested positive for cocaine, according to the Martinsburg Police Department. At 2:13 a.m., a Martinsburg Police Department officer stopped the Honda after he noticed it traveling at a slow rate of speed, according to a news release.

SANDY HOOK -- On their third day of searching, officials were unable Monday to find a Gaithersburg, Md., man who is believed to have drowned Saturday in the Potomac River below Harpers Ferry, W.Va., after he and his brother were swept into Class III whitewater rapids while swimming to a fishing spot, officials said. A helicopter was used Monday morning to search for Daniel Figueroa, 37, and Department of Natural Resources Police officers searched for the man from the shoreline at different times during the day, Sgt. Brian Albert of the Maryland Natural Resources Police said Monday night.

A warrant has been issued charging a Maryland man with the February robbery of Walgreens pharmacy in Martinsburg, according to a Martinsburg Police Department news release. Robert O. Bottenfield, 24, of Gaithersburg, Md., is being held at the Montgomery County (Md.) Detention Center in Rockville, Md., where he has been charged with armed robbery, according to Martinsburg police and court records. Maryland authorities told police in Martinsburg that Bottenfield confessed to multiple pharmacy robberies, including the one at Walgreens at 101 Forbes Drive, police said.

Avoiding the three-year prison term recommended by prosecutors, a Montgomery County man was sentenced Tuesday in Washington County Circuit Court to 30 days in jail on gun charges. Jeffrey Hanan, 48, of Gaithersburg pleaded guilty to making a false statement on an application to purchase a firearm and to having a loaded handgun in a vehicle. The false statement charge was prosecuted by Maryland Assistant Attorney General Clarence Goetz, while Assistant State's Attorney Brett Wilson prosecuted the charge of having an illegal handgun in a vehicle.
