FUNKSTOWN - Washington County Sheriff's Douglas Mullendore will meet with the Mayor and Council today at 7 p.m. for a workshop to address the recent rash of destruction of property in the town. At a May 28 meeting, several residents brought up issues concerning sporadic police protection and patrols in the town, and whether more can be done to protect vehicles and private property. - Marlo Barnhart

When he wanted to stop plans for a new Wal-Mart Supercenter near his hometown last year, Kline called Wal-Mart headquarters in Arkansas to share a piece of his mind with the "big dogs," he said. "When I get something going, I go to the top," said Kline, 72. "I'd do that again real quick. " When he wanted new streets and sidewalks for Funkstown, he called officials at the State Highway Administration.

An electrical failure in a computer printer started a fire that caused $30,000 in damages to a home on Friday at 345 Emmert Road near Funkstown, the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office said. The owner of the home reported the fire at 4:41 p.m., according to a fire marshal's office news release. A smoke alarm was activated, and no one was injured. Authorities said the fire, which started in a converted garage, caused $25,000 in damage to the one-story structure and $5,000 in damages to the contents.

A Funkstown woman was injured Saturday morning when her car collided with a pickup truck on Interstate 81 south of Cearfoss Pike, Maryland State Police said. Frances Ecton of Funkstown was taken to Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown to be treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, according to a state police news release. The driver of the pickup, David Durboraw of Greencastle, Pa., also was taken to Meritus Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries, the release said.

The National Pike Days Festival will be celebrated in Funkstown on Saturday. The wagon train is slated to arrive at about 4:15 p.m. John Joppey's Smokin' Barbeque will sell food and drinks, and live bluegrass music will entertain crowds from 4 to 9 p.m. The wagon train will depart the park at 10 a.m. Sunday following a pancake breakfast. All are welcome to attend.

South Edgewood Drive was blocked off Monday from the intersection with East Baltimore Street in Funkstown due to a sewer main break, said Brenda Haynes, Funkstown's clerk and treasurer. “A maintenance worker from one of the pumping stations found the break last night,” she said. “Workers came out at 6 p.m. yesterday.” The sewer main was carrying sewage to a treatment plant, but no sewage got on the road, Haynes said. Work crews from Henson and Son worked to repair the sewer main Monday, Haynes said.

LEGION BASEBALL FREDERICK, Md. - Funkstown grabbed a 5-0 lead that held through four innings behind the pitching of Andy Taylor but Gaithersburg rallied to post an 8-7 win on Friday in the Maryland State Tournament at McCurdy Field. Taylor hit a solo home run to open the scoring in the second inning and Phillip Powell added homers in the fourth and sixth innings. Gaithersburg hit Funkstown with a five-run seventh inning, putting the loss on reliever Josh Bussard.

FUNKSTOWN - Benjamin Art Gallery of Hagerstown has announced an "Art on Sight" partnership at several area locations including Interiors of Maryland at 2 Baltimore St. in Funkstown. Natasha Arnall, owner of the Funkstown design firm, said she was happy to participate in the new venture. "We have 15 or so on the walls here," Arnall said. "It's nice because it gives clients a chance to see what is available so they can choose between the different styles. " Arnall said she also has other pictures by local artists with local scenes available in her studio.
