CRS short of goal by $100,000 By DAN KULIN / Staff Writer Community Rescue Service's 2000 subscription and fund-raising drive is about $100,000 short of its goal, but the ambulance company's interim director, J. Michael Nye, hopes December contributions and an upcoming subscription drive aimed at businesses will make up the difference. Overall, CRS received more money from fewer subscribers this year than in 1999. A primary factor is that CRS increased most of its subscription rates for 2000.

CVSM seeks funds for drive By STACEY DANZUSO / Staff Writer, Chambersburg CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Cumberland Valley School of Music annual fund-raiser is again under way to help offset the cost of lessons and other program expenses. For the last decade the Cumberland Valley School of Music has lured musical masters to the area to perform and has offered hundreds of students instrument and voice lessons. "Over its 11-year history, the CVSM has brought talented individuals of all ages to their fullest potential and provided untold pleasure to area residents through the performances the school sponsors," said Gene Herritt, a board member and Resource Development Committee chairman.

Waynesboro Medic 2 kicks off fund drive for Greencastle unit By STACEY DANZUSO / Staff Writer, Chambersburg GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Waynesboro Medic 2 kicked off a fund-raising campaign Thursday to raise $250,000 for a new emergency unit in Greencastle that could save lives by shaving valuable minutes of its response time. Medic 2 responds to life-threatening injuries in the Waynesboro-Greencastle area. After determining that about 30 percent of its calls were in Greencastle, members began investigating the possibility of establishing a second medic unit there, said Debby DeWees.

Academy launches fund drive By RICHARD F. Association of University Women members bound to boost book sale Dottie Cochrane and Louise Abdullah's loyalty to the Hagerstown AAUW chapter is one for the books. For 37 years, the two members of the American Association of University Women have worked tirelessly for the organization's biggest annual fund-raiser, the AAUW Used Book Sale. Throughout the year, Cochrane, Abdullah and other AAUW volunteers meet in a room in the basement of the library. There they sort, price and box books in preparation for the annual spring sale.

Community briefs Teen Read Week set for Oct. 15-21 Middle and high school students in Washington County secondary public schools will observe Teen Read Week from Oct. 15-21. Teen Read Week is an annual observance celebrating the fun of reading. The Washington County Young Adult Literature Study Group will kick off Teen Read Week Saturday, Oct. 14, at Border's Bookstore from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students from middle and high schools will present readers' theater, skits, oral interpretations, book talks and more.

CRS nearing fund-raising goal By DAN KULIN / Staff Writer Almost midway through its subscription and fund-raising drive, Community Rescue Service is more than halfway toward its $402,000 goal and has brought in about $20,000 more than it collected in 1999. The jump in funds over last year is largely due to CRS essentially doubling its subscription rates for this year, according to a CRS official. "The story here is the people who always supported us are continuing to support us and are supporting us even more," said J. Michael Nye, vice president of the CRS board and CRS interim executive director.

Byrd, D-W.Va., on Thursday announced a proposed $5 billion grant fund for fire departments nationwide. cont. from news page "That's a lot of money, $5 billion," he said. "That's $5 for every minute since Jesus Christ was born. " Byrd was at Charles Town Races to lend his support to a $2 million-plus fund drive by Citizens Fire Co. in Charles Town. The company is working to replace its cramped fire station and meeting hall with one more than five times the size.

Funds raised thus far for the United Way of Washington County tally $257,000 - about 15 percent of the $1.7 million goal set at the September kickoff of the agency's fall giving campaign. Contributions include corporate and leadership gifts, $114,616 from employee campaigns, and $31,869 from the residential mail appeal. Companies such as the Washington County Health System, city and county government offices and the county school system are expected to complete their fund drives in October and November.
