A Connecticut woman was taken to Meritus Medical Center east of Hagerstown to be treated for moderate injuries that she suffered when the vehicle she was driving traveled off the roadway and struck a tree Monday morning on Flickerville Road in Brush Creek Township, Pennsylvania State Police said. Syeda S. Fatima, 30, of New London, Conn., was driving a 2002 Toyota Highlander on Flickerville Road near Fischer Road at about 6:45 a.m., when the vehicle traveled off the roadway, struck a tree and rolled onto its passenger side, according to a state police news release.

The unemployment rates worsened in Franklin and Fulton counties from May to June, according to the latest data from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. In Franklin County, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose one-half of a percentage point to 6.7 percent in June. Neighboring Fulton County's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased two-tenths of a percentage point to 9 percent. Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased one-tenth of a percentage point to 7.5 percent, while the national rate was unchanged at 8.2 percent, according to a news release.

Franklin and Fulton counties in Pennsylvania experienced notable drops in their unemployment rates in February, according to the latest data from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. Franklin County experienced its largest over-the-month drop since January 2003, when the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell six-tenths of a percentage point to 6.8 percent, a labor department analysis stated. Neighboring Fulton County’s rate changed from 10.8 percent in January to 9.9 percent in February.

The dwindling number of GOP presidential candidates and the sparse number of Democrats running for office led to diminished voter turnout Tuesday in Franklin County, Pa. About 27 percent of registered Republicans and 16 percent of registered Democrats went to the polls, according to complete, but unofficial results. In 2008, the last presidential primary, overall voter turnout was 35 percent. “Turnout was significantly affected by the exit of (presidential candidate) Rick Santorum.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has fewer projects scheduled this year in Fulton County, Pa., due to financial constraints. PennDOT representatives met with local government leaders Tuesday in Fulton County to discuss plans for the next two years. Budget cuts are affecting PennDOT District 9 construction, which had $179 million in spending in 2009 and an anticipated $74 million in 2013, according to Thomas A. Prestash, district executive. “You're going to see a lot less construction in the next couple years,” Prestash said.

A Harrisonville, Pa., man was killed when his station wagon collided with a pickup truck Tuesday morning at the intersection of Rock Hill Road and Pa. 522 in Fulton County, Pennsylvania State Police said. Charles Emory Sipes, 71, of 11380 Pleasant Ridge Road in Harrisonville, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a state police news release. Troopers said Sipes was driving a 1989 Dodge station wagon south on Pa. 522 at about 6:15 a.m., when a 2004 Chevrolet 1500 driven by Aaron Russell Shives, 22, pulled into the intersection from Rock Hill Road, troopers said.

Two Fulton County, Pa., teenagers were killed and two others suffered major injuries Tuesday morning when the car in which they were riding went off the roadway and struck several trees on Pa. 915 in Wells Township, Pennsylvania State Police said. Bryant Andrew White, 18, of 4275 N. Valley Road in Wells Tannery, and Cody Gracey, 17, of Hustontown, Pa., were killed in the crash, according to Fulton County Coroner Berley Souders and state police. Cheyenne Nicole Hege, 18, of 4917 Cito Road in McConnellsburg, Pa., and William Joseph Hess, 19, of 32132 Great Cove Road in Fort Littleton, Pa., were flown to Altoona Regional Health System in Altoona, Pa., to be treated for major injuries, state police said in a news release.

A Fulton County, Pa., man has been charged with sexually abusing a girl multiple times over the course of the last 2 1/2 years, according to Pennsylvania State Police. Warren David Kerlin III, 50, of Burnt Cabins, Pa., is charged with rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault, indecent assault and other related offenses, according to a state police news release. Troopers allege Kerlin sexually assaulted the girl over the course of the last 2 1/2 years in Dublin Township.
