Two Harpers Ferry, W.Va., residents were charged with drug offenses after officers used Stop Sticks to deflate the tires of their vehicle during a chase Thursday in Frederick County, Md., the Frederick County Sheriff's Office said. The driver of the vehicle, Terri L. Straub, 49, was charged with possession of marijuana, fleeing and eluding, and driving on both a suspended and revoked license, according to a sheriff's office news release. She also was cited with numerous traffic violations, including reckless driving, failure to drive right of center and driving a vehicle without current registration plates, the release said.

A 70-year-old West Virginia man was killed Thursday afternoon when his car collided with a pickup truck on U.S. 340 at Keep Tryst Road in the southern end of Washington County, Maryland State Police said. Robert Matthew Michalak of Charles Town, W.Va., was traveling northbound on Keep Tryst Road in a 2005 Mazda 6 at 2:46 p.m., when witnesses said he failed to come to a complete stop at a flashing red signal at the intersection with U.S. 340, according to a state policeĀ  news release.

Five police agencies were involved in an unsuccessful search of the Greenbrier State Park area Sunday morning for a man who was involved in the theft of a Chevrolet Lumina in Hagerstown, and at one point was wanted in connection with a homicide case in Hagerstown, Maryland State Police said. More than 20 officers were involved in the search because, initially, the lookout call for the man had him matching the description of a homicide suspect, though Hagerstown police weren't sure whether he was actually connected to the homicide, State Police Cpl. Tim Lease said.

FREDERICK, Md. - A Frederick man was charged with manslaughter and other offenses Monday stemming from the death of a motorcyclist Sunday, the Frederick County Sheriff's Office said. James Joseph Mervinsky, 40, was charged with manslaughter, negligent driving, two counts of failure to remain at the scene of an accident with injuries, fleeing and eluding police, attempting to elude police and driving while impaired, deputies said. Mervinsky was fleeing from police when he drove his vehicle into the path of John Wayne Adkins, 28, of Middletown, Md., who was riding a motorcycle south on Md. 85 near Buckeystown, Md., deputies said.

Body from burning Thurmont house identified THURMONT, Md. -- Medical examiners have identified one of the two bodies found Oct. 31 in a burning house in Thurmont as Eric Lester Forrest, 39, one of the house's tenants, according to a Frederick County Sheriff's Office press release. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore still is working to determine the cause and manner of death and to identify the second victim, deputies said. Fire and rescue units arrived about 3:30 a.m. at 12841B Catoctin Furnace Road, where flames were coming from the one-story single-family home, deputies said.

Police log for Sept. 21 Man charged with drugs violation by city police A man was in custody Wednesday evening after Hagerstown City Police observed him with drugs at Bethel and Jonathan streets, police alleged. Patrol officers arrested the man, whose name was unavailable, at 6:30 p.m. Police said the man was charged with possession of drugs and was awaiting a bond hearing Wednesday evening. Gauge with radioactive material inside missing ADAMSTOWN, Md. - A moisture-density gauge containing radioactive material fell off a pickup truck Wednesday in Frederick County, Md., and hadn't been found by evening, according to Frederick County Sheriff's deputies.

A Berkeley Springs, W.Va., man was shot to death early New Year's Day at a home in Frederick County, Va., according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. Michael Scott Shirley, 27, was found dead shortly after 1:10 a.m. at 1373 South Timber Ridge Road near Cross Junction, Va., sheriff's office Capt. John Heflin said. Bradley Scott Gregory, 27, of Winchester, Va., was charged with first-degree murder, Heflin said. He was also charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

FREDERICK, Md. -- A Frederick woman was killed Sunday morning when the 2003 Toyota Sienna she was driving north on Yellow Springs Road went off the road and struck a tree, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. Christine J. List, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. List's husband, James W. List, 45, was hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries, police said. Alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the crash, which occurred at about 2:21 a.m., the sheriff's office said in a news release.

MYERSVILLE, Md. -- A Boonsboro man died Sunday morning after the motorcycle he was driving hit a fence and concrete culvert north of Myersville, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. Thomas Dixon Lawrence Jr., 28, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. Alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the accident, police said. Lawrence was driving a 2006 Honda CBR 600RR south on Pleasant Walk Road around 1:45 a.m. Sunday when the sport bike left the road on the southbound shoulder, and hit a fence and concrete culvert, police said.

FREDERICK, Md. -- A Frederick man died after being ejected from a car Monday night on North Franklinville Road just north of Thurmont, Md., according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. Aaron Mack, 22, died of his injuries after being flown to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, a press release from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office said. Another occupant of the vehicle, Cody Hahn, 21, of Thurmont, suffered life-threatening injuries, police said. He also was flown to R Adams Cowley and was in critical condition there Tuesday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

MIDDLETOWN, Md. --A Middletown man was killed in a tractor accident Monday in the 8600 block of Hollow Road, according to a press release from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. David C. Burdette, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene after the tractor flipped on top of him in a marshy area on private property, the release said. Burdette was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy. The accident was under investigation Monday.

FREDERICK, Md. -- A Knoxville, Md., man was charged with driving under the influence, driving without a license, fleeing on foot and other offenses after the Mitsubishi 3000 GT he was driving in the 3000 block of Olive School Road went airborne Tuesday morning and struck a utility pole, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. The car also hit a cement culvert and caught fire, according to a police press release. Michael D. Shumaker, 19, fled on foot and was found about two hours later in a wooded area along Md. 464, the release said.

MT. AIRY, Md. -- One person was killed and four others were taken to a Baltimore hospital after a two-vehicle crash Monday evening in the 4000 block of Bill Moxley Road, the Frederick County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. At about 7:17 p.m., a 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Jimmy J. Hawkins, 20, of Damascus, Md., was traveling westbound when it crested a hill and struck an eastbound 1995 Chevrolet Corsica driven by James P. Valentine Jr., 51, of Mt. Airy., the release said.
