University System of Maryland at Hagerstown senior Samantha Sines is expecting to graduate this spring so she's looking for a job. In preparation for job interviews, Sines participated last month in mock interviews with business people who gave her feedback about how she was answering questions, what she was wearing, and about her resume, she said. On Monday, Sines put what she'd learned to work as she interviewed for elementary school teaching positions with public school systems in Washington and Frederick counties.

A small group of Washington County parents has submitted to Washington County Public Schools a concept proposal for a charter school with an environmental focus and a strong emphasis on hands-on learning. Under state law, proposals for new charter schools go through local public school systems, and their teachers would be employees of the local public school system. The Washington County Board of Education would vote on whether to approve the charter school proposal within 120 days of receiving the final application, according to the school system's charter school application packet.

Gael Butcher, principal of Marshall Street School and the Washington County Job Development Program at Marshall Street - both aimed at helping special-education students, will retire in February. Butcher said Thursday that at the time of her retirement, she will be just shy of five years as principal of Marshall Street and Job Development. Butcher, who lives in Middletown, Md., said she plans on spending more time with her husband and children. After retiring in 2005 from Frederick County (Md.)

Brunswick High School senior Drew Howard has already been named prom king once this year, but he might get a second shot on Saturday. Unhappy with the music and restrictions on dancing at their April 27 prom, Howard and seven other students are staging Prom 2.0 at the Brunswick City Park Building. About 150 students have already purchased tickets, Howard said. “This is basically a rebel kind of dance,” Howard said. Attendees will not sport prom dresses and tuxedos; the theme is “police-ish,” complete with caution tape draping the walls as students give themselves an opportunity to dance the way they like.

Middletown Middle School is closed for studenets today due to lack of water service, Frederick County Public Schools spokeswoman Marita S. Loose announced in a news release. Staff should report to work, the release said.
