Mike Minor threw six strong innings, Dan Uggla broke it open with a two-run single and the Atlanta Braves denied Gio Gonzalez his 20th win, completing a sweep of the first-place Washington Nationals 5-1 on Sunday night. Minor (9-10) allowed five hits before turning it over to the bullpen. Cory Gearrin, Luis Avilan and Chad Durbin each worked a scoreless inning to close it out. The Braves broke a scoreless tie in the third against Gonzalez (19-8) on Chipper Jones' single. Freddie Freeman added a sacrifice fly. Washington closed to 2-1 on Ian Desmond's RBI single in the sixth, but the Braves pulled away with a three-run seventh, taking advantage of an error by third baseman Ryan Zimmerman.

Andrelton Simmons hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, then made an eye-popping play to start the ninth as the Atlanta Braves beat the Washington Nationals 3-2 on Monday night and ended their four-game losing streak. Atlanta beat the Nationals for the eighth straight time dating to last season. The Braves swept three games at Washington earlier this month. Washington's Stephen Strasburg ended his career-worst streak of losses in four straight starts. He allowed two runs in six innings.

Craig Stammen pitched four perfect innings after ace Stephen Strasburg left with a strained right oblique, Denard Span tripled and scored two runs, and the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 on Friday night. Strasburg lasted just two innings before leaving the shortest outing of his career. He will head back to Washington to have his side examined. The victory snapped a two-game skid for Washington, which trimmed its second-place deficit in the NL East to 4½ games behind the Braves.

Freddie Freeman said it was smart for Washington's Ryan Mattheus to walk Brian McCann with first base open in the ninth inning. Why face McCann, a six-time All-Star who hit a three-run homer earlier in the game, when the Nationals instead could face Freeman, a rookie who didn't have a hit in the game at that point? Freeman seized the opportunity, delivering a single to right field to drive in Martin Prado from second base, lifting the Atlanta Braves to a 9-8 win over the Nationals on Sunday.

Pitching in the big leagues for the second time since undergoing shoulder surgery in 2009, Chien-Ming Wang lasted longer and allowed fewer earned runs than in his season debut with the Washington Nationals. The result was the same, though, and thus the two-time 19-game winner remains in pursuit of his first victory in more than two years. Wang gave up six runs, two earned, in five innings Wednesday in a 6-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves. It wasn't an outstanding outing by any definition, but it was an improvement over his debut five days earlier, when the right-hander allowed four earned runs in four innings against the Mets.

Bryce Harper returned from an ankle injury to single and score as a pinch-hitter, and Roger Bernadina had a tiebreaking hit in the seventh inning as the Washington Nationals earned a split of the day-night doubleheader with a 5-2 victory Saturday night. Harper injured his ankle in the opener and was lifted after the second inning. The Braves won the first game 4-0 behind Ben Sheets' strong performance. Bernadina, who entered as a defensive replacement after Harper fouled a bunt off his left ankle in the first inning of the first game, had five hits on the day including a seventh inning, go-ahead RBI single in the nightcap.

Jason Heyward singled and Justin Upton doubled in a three-run eighth inning Wednesday night in the Atlanta Braves' sweep-capping 6-3 win over the Washington Nationals, a game played nicely by both sides one night after a fastball to Bryce Harper's thigh cleared both benches. Upton also homered, and Kris Medlen (9-10) allowed three runs and three hits over seven innings as the Braves won their 13th straight to take a staggering-for-early-August 15 1/2-game lead over the second-place Nationals in the NL East.

Dan Haren had been waiting to prove he belonged in Washington's vaunted starting rotation. After winning his last two starts, Haren is feeling a little better, and that's mostly because he's not overthrowing his fastball. “I'm not going to care about velocity anymore,” he said with a smile. “I'm sick of that. It just gives me problems. I'm just going to be myself out there. Whether it's 88 or 85 (mph), I don't really care. I know I can get people out.” Haren pitched eight sharp innings, Denard Span hit a two-run double and the Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves 3-1 Thursday night.

As a .179 career hitter, Tim Hudson doesn't expect much when he steps to the plate. After pulling off the unlikely feat of hitting a homer in his 200th career win, Hudson concluded “The stars were aligned and it was meant to be.” Hudson was a dual threat in his milestone win, dominating on the mound over seven innings and  hitting a homer and a double to lead the Atlanta Braves to an 8-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night....

B.J. Upton returned to the lineup and had two hits, including a game-ending single in the 10th inning that lifted the Atlanta Braves to a 2-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Saturday night. Upton, hitting only .145 at the start of the game, had been held out of two straight starts by manager Fredi Gonzalez, who hoped the rest would jumpstart the center fielder. And Upton came through with a single to right field off Henry Rodriguez (0-1) to drive in Jordan Schafer from second base.

Freddie Freeman insists the NL East race is far from over. The Atlanta Braves are 6 1/2 games out of the division lead with 16 games to play, but Freeman believes they still have a good chance to catch the Washington Nationals. “I mean have they won the division yet?” Freeman said. “No, they haven't, so obviously we do.” Pinch-runner Jeff Baker scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning when reliever Ryan Mattheus hit Andrelton Simmons' uniform with a bases-loaded pitch that helped Atlanta beat the Nationals 5-4 on Saturday.
