BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - The 14th annual Uniquely West Virginia wine and food festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday offers a free opportunity to sample dozens of state-grown products, including more than 25 vintages from five wineries. More than 75 antique vendors become a new part of the festival at the north end of the Old Factory Antique Mall. A block from Old Factory, visitors can see more than 80 quilts of all sizes on display at the Ice House Gallery's annual Delectable Mountains Quilt show.

It's that season again, when we eat too much and move too little. It's the time when tempting foods are everywhere and darker, colder days make it easier to sit on the couch than to be active. It's the season when many of us put our health on hold until it's time for New Year's resolutions again. There's a much more positive way to approach the holiday eating season. You can maintain your weight, increase your energy level, and stay healthy throughout the holidays without giving up any of the traditional treats.

If your healthy eating plan has been on hiatus, it is time to get back on track to making healthful choices.  A motivator to eating right could be eating right with color. When you include all the colors of MyPlate ( www.choosemyplate.gov ) you are headed to enjoying healthful choices. Each colored section of Myplate represents a food group and the recommended proportion of foods from that group.  To include all of the colors of MyPlate as you march toward a healthy eating plan - follow these tips:  Fill half your plate with vegetables and fruit (represented by the colors green and red)

The 2000 Dietary Guidelines for Americans offer sensible guidelines to help you with these choices. March is National Nutrition Month and a good time to refocus on dietary guidelines to help build a healthy lifestyle. The three key messages in the 2000 Dietary Guidelines are to aim for fitness, build a better base and choose sensibly.

For good health, eat a variety of foods from each food group every day.    Grains — Choose whole grain bread. Check the ingredients label for whole grain content rather than judging based on the color of the bread. Verify that whole wheat or other whole grain is the first ingredient. Also:  Try brown rice instead of white rice.

Are you bored with your eating habits? Does it seem like you eat the same old things meal after meal? Have you ever thought about how many different foods you eat in a day? Food is about much more than nutrients - it's about flavors, colors, textures and smells. Eating a variety of foods is the best way to get the nutrients your body craves - and to satisfy your taste buds at the same time. Eating a wide variety of foods is an essential step to a long and healthy life. In fact, some experts recommend eating as many as 30 different foods in a day. If you're in a nutrition rut, there are plenty of healthy reasons to expand the variety of foods you eat. Studies show that people with the longest life expectancies, like the Greeks and the Japanese, eat small amounts of many different foods.

As a parent, you are the most important influence on your child. You can do many things to help your child develop healthy lifetime eating habits.  Offering a variety of foods help children get the nutrients they need from every food group. They will also be more likely to try new foods and like more foods. Eat vegetables, fruits and whole grains with meals or snacks. Let your child see that you like to munch on raw vegetables. Grocery shopping can teach your child about food and nutrition.

Eating smart and staying healthy sounds simple. But with the focus on large portions in the restaurant industry, with the never-ending array of sweet and savory snack foods that fill our grocery shelves and vending machines, and with all the conflicting advice on what we should be eating to stay healthy, eating smart can be a challenge. Eating smart doesn't have to mean giving up good taste or all your favorite foods. It does mean designating high-calorie, high-fat foods such as chips, fries and donuts as "sometimes" foods and making lower-fat, higher-fiber choices your "everyday" foods.

U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, R-Md., is a 2004 recipient of the Food Distribution Industry's Thomas Jefferson Award. The Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and International Foodservice Distributors Association (IFDA) presented the award at a Sept. 22 ceremony on Capitol Hill. At the end of each Congress, FMI and IFDA present the award to senators and representatives who demonstrate their commitment to free enterprise through their votes on issues such as taxes, free trade, labor policy and other economic matters.
