Mrs. Pauline “Polly” Louise Toms, 86, of Frederick, went to be with her heavenly father on Dec. 18, 2011, at the Kline Hospice House of Mount Airy. She was the wife of the late Carlton “Pete” Atlee Toms, who predeceased her in January 2003. Born Aug. 24, 1925, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Howard L. and Rosa Morningstar Kolb, formerly of Utica. She attended school in Lewistown, and worked at Sagners and Price Electric, and later retired from American Optical.

Ethel C. Hammond, (nee Kemper), 93, died Nov. 7, 2011. She was the wife of the late Harry M. Hammond; mother of the Rev. H. Martin Hammond Jr., William K. Hammond, Helen C. Nussear and Virginia Conmy. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was a resident of Hagerstown, Md., for 18 years. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Isaac Jogues Church, 9215 Old Harford Road, Baltimore, Md., Saturday, Nov. 19, at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Stella Maris Hospice Care Fund, 2300 Dulaney Valley Road, Timonium, MD 21093.

Mrs. Ina Mae (Bumbaugh) Buhrman, 96, a resident of Quincy Village and formerly of 14228 Royer Road, Cascade, Md., died at 4:40 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at the nursing home. She had been in failing health for the past two weeks.   Born Aug. 27, 1915, in Washington Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Crawford R. and Ina M. (Pryor) Bumbaugh.   Mrs. Buhrman attended Sabillasville, Md., schools.   She and her husband, the late G. Earl Buhrman, were married in August 1932.

Mrs. Betty Lucille (Smith) French, 84, of Brunswick, Md., passed away Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Earl French, who passed away Aug. 5, 1972. Born April 12, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Ruth (Souders) Smith. She was the past auxiliary president of the Frederick Eagles. She was a member of Brunswick Moose and Eagles as well as AARP. She enjoyed feeding the birds at her house, NASCAR, bingo, watching TV and growing flowers.

Ms. Debra R. (Anderson) Clites, 57, of 15673 S. Young Road, Lot 7, Greencastle, died Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 18, 2011, in the Chambersburg Hospital, surrounded by her family, following a yearlong battle with cancer.   Born Jan. 8, 1954, in McConnellsburg, Pa., she was the daughter of William R. Anderson Sr. and Betty R. (Mumma) Anderson, both of State Line. She lived most of her life in the Greencastle area.   Ms. Clites graduated from Forbes Road High School with the Class of 1971.

The Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association is seeking vendors and exhibitors for its annual Flower and Garden Show, which will be Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18, at the College's Athletic, Recreation, and Community Center. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Set-up will be held from noon to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 16. All of Somerset County, Pa., appeared to be quiet at 6 a.m. Sunday until my car turned down the lengthy road that takes visitors to the newly dedicated Flight 93 National Memorial. There, I encountered all the vehicles that seemed to be missing from the main roads feeding the site. It took almost an hour to reach the parking area where shuttle buses waited to transport media and other visitors another quarter-mile to the memorial itself. Overnight rains had given way to sunshine and a blue sky reminiscent of the one on Sept.

Cindy Downs will be giving a presentation on “Edible Flowers” at Dollie's Tea Room Thursday at 7 p.m. Cindy will demonstrate recipes that include flower ice cubes, stuffed lilies, candied flowers and lavender cordials. Participants will also sample rose-scented scones, flower dip and flower butter, flower vinaigrette, flower garden salad and lavender cookies. Come and learn which flowers are edible and how to prepare them. Attendees will receive a packet of recipes. You can contact the tea room at 301-842-2720 for more information.
