FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police shot at a vehicle twice Sunday afternoon during a pursuit that lasted about an hour, involved two suspect vehicles and occurred on roads, dirt lanes and cornfields, according to a news release. The suspect in the chase rammed four state police vehicles and tried to run over a state police officer who was on foot, the release said. Bruce Wayne Hobbs, 50, 2642 Laburnum Ave., Roanoke, Va., was charged with driving under the influence, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and other charges, the release said.

Window case is clear To the editor: Why in the world would anyone spend so much time criticizing such a beautiful addition to downtown Hagerstown? The citizens of Hagerstown should be thanking Mr. and Mrs. Don Bowman for investing in the city, not trying to run him and other investors off, by nitpicking ridiculous and trivial details. Bulls and Bears is the best thing that's happened in Hagerstown in a long, long time. I was hoping this investment might encourage others developers to invest in the inner city.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- A suspicious object destroyed by a Pennsylvania State Police bomb squad Friday night near the former Landis Tool Co. turned out to be something from a hi-tech scavenger hunt, Waynesboro Police Chief Mark King said. Police were called at 3:47 p.m. by a resident who saw suspicious activity on Sixth Street near the office building of the closed plant, King said. The resident saw a vehicle stop and someone pick up a package, he said. Cpl. Kurt Wagaman and Patrolman Tom Storey were sent to investigate and found the object.

HAGERSTOWN -- Ten days after requesting a list of active firefighters in the Fairplay Volunteer Fire Co., Washington County Fire and Emergency Services Director Kevin Lewis said Tuesday that he still had not received any documentation that the company meets the state's minimum requirement. The company remains active, but surrounding fire companies are continuing to provide dual coverage for the Fairplay area, Lewis said Tuesday in a briefing for the Washington County Commissioners.

JAN. 27, 1943-NOV. 24, 2008 WAYNESBORO, Pa. - James C. "Jim" Scott, 65, of 520 W. Sixth St., died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at Waynesboro Hospital. Born Jan. 27, 1943, in Lock Haven, Pa., he was the son of the late Warren and Viola Criswell Scott. He was a 1960 graduate of Altoona (Pa.) Area High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He retired in 1980 as master sergeant, following 20 years of service. After retiring from the military, he was employed in civil service at Site R, Fort Ritchie, Md., and later in Omaha, retiring in 1999.

HAGERSTOWN -- The City of Hagerstown will spend $842,777 to buy new routers, pagers and radios for the Hagerstown Police Department. The City Council voted 5-0 Tuesday to buy the equipment, which will be paid for through bond financing. Hagerstown Police Capt. Charles Summers said Monday that the new routers, pagers and radios will replace gear that is more than 10 years old. "It will cover everybody on the police force," Summers said. "Hopefully, we'll get them at the beginning of the new year.

Larry A. Vaughn, 66 APRIL 24, 1942-NOV. 15, 2008 Larry Andrew Vaughn, 66, of Hagerstown, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, at Washington County Hospital. Born April 24, 1942, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Virgil and Frances E. Stottlemyer Vaughn. He was a 1961 graduate of South Hagerstown High School. He worked as a clerk at Mack Trucks in Hagerstown. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Hagerstown. He was a two-term city councilman for the City of Hagerstown from 1973 to 1981.

SHADY GROVE, Pa. - Few new details were available Sunday concerning a Pa. 16 house fire that hospitalized four people and closed the road on Saturday. The fire broke out shortly before 4:45 p.m. Saturday at 2027 Buchanan Trail East, a two-story wood-frame construction rental property owned by Ron Kline and Steve Zeis, both of Greencastle, Pa., according to Greencastle (Pa.) Rescue Hose Co. Fire Chief Kevin Barnes. Two adults and two children were taken to Chambersburg, Pa., and Waynesboro, Pa., hospitals.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- A Greencastle, Pa., woman was killed Wednesday afternoon in a head-on collision with a dump truck in front of 84 Lumber on Pa. 16 west of Waynesboro. Evelyn L. Rowe, 86, was driving a blue 1998 Buick Century that hit a 1978 GMC dump truck at 2:15 p.m., according to a news release from Franklin County (Pa.) Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner. The heavily traveled section of Pa. 16 was closed for more than two hours as police and fire police rerouted westbound traffic onto Prices Church Road.
