A Waynesboro Area School District program helping first- and second-graders become stronger readers recently received recognition from education professionals. The Early Birds program at Fairview, Mowrey and Summitview elementary schools provides language arts support to students from 7:50 to 8:35 a.m. Monday through Thursday. It received kudos from the Shippensburg (Pa.) University School Study Council, according to Fairview Elementary School Principal Dianne Eberhardt. The morning has proven to be a good time for instruction, Eberhardt said.

Editor's note: Staff writer Jennifer Fitch is spending two days with Fairview Elementary School fifth-graders attending Outdoor School at Camp Eder in Adams County, Pa. FAIRFIELD, Pa. - Fairview Elementary School fifth-graders staying at Camp Eder in Fairfield, Pa., this week broke into four groups after a breakfast of waffles this morning. Some of the Waynesboro, Pa., students went on the three-hour nature hike, while the others participated in group games, did a stream study and learned pioneer skills.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- Sexual predators, icy sidewalks and traffic prompted two Waynesboro Area School District students' mothers to ask Tuesday whether they can have school bus service. Both families live in the Borough of Waynesboro and within the state regulations for which students should walk to school. Transportation reimbursement is provided to schools for elementary students living more than one and a half miles away from school and secondary school students living two miles away.

WAYNESBORO, Pa.-- A longtime Franklin County, Pa., educator was being remembered this weekend as someone who knew every student's name and closely followed their academic and extracurricular progress. James Hasson, former Waynesboro football coach and Scotland School for Veterans Children principal, died Saturday morning from a heart attack at age 58. His wife, Linda, said her husband attended almost every sporting event in the Waynesboro area, tracking teenagers' endeavors in high school and college.

The Waynesboro Area School District will purchase land adjacent to Fairview Elementary School under an agreement approved Tuesday by the school board. The Waynesboro Area School Board voted 8-0 to sign a contract for land that has not been and will not be appraised. The agreement stipulates the school district will pay $9,000 for the property on Fairview Avenue. The sale price was determined by the seller, according to school board Vice President Ed Wilson. Wilson said the vacant, residential land is about 40 to 50 feet wide on the elementary school's south side.
