wandaw@herald-mail.com Dottie Henson said she's been trying to get a representative on the phone to request her new Medicare prescription drug card. "I tried for days, they just put you on hold and you just give up," said Henson, 77, of Hagerstown, who attended Thursday's 12th annual Senior Fair with the hope of speaking with someone face-to-face about getting her card. "This business of pushing one button and then another is for the birds," said Henson's friend and fellow Washington County Hospital retiree Ann McElroy, 76. The women were among a crowd of more than 1,000 senior citizens from throughout Washington County who drove or took a shuttle to the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center on Dual Highway for this year's event, according to Senior Fair steering committee member John Kenney.

andrews@herald-mail.com Clean teeth, a trim coat and a happy wag went a long way at the Berkeley County Youth Fair Monday. Teresa Verdi's Labrador retriever, named Yoo Hoo, was named best in show at the 2002 Dog Show. "Her dog was exceedingly happy to work for her," said Sandy Melichar of Ellicott City, Md., who judged the dogs. Teresa controlled Yoo Hoo well and praised him often, Melichar said. As a result, Yoo Hoo followed Teresa's every command and "did it with his tail wagging," Melichar said.

chambersburg@herald-mail.com CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Sunday was a day of relaxation around the Franklin County fairgrounds. Parking was plentiful and only a few dozen people spread out among the arena bleachers to watch the horse competitions in the afternoon. As always, the first day of the Franklin County Fair was subdued, with Sunday's attractions including a youth horse show, a horse pull and the annual vesper service. But what a difference a day makes. Beginning today, stables will be filled with livestock, baked goods and produce will crowd tables under the tents, and children will line up for rides on the swings and Ferris wheel, which stood motionless Sunday afternoon.
