COLLEGE TRACK Brown earns NEC weekly honor EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Mount St. Mary's sophomore sprinter Chad Brown, a Smithsburg graduate, was named the Road Runner Sports Northeast Conference Track Athlete of the Week. Brown won the 200-meter dash in 21.70 seconds and was second in the 100 in 10.78 at the Lou Onesty/Milton Abramson Invitational, hosted by the University of Virginia last weekend. Brown, who has finished either first or second in the 100 and 200 at each of the Mount's last three meets, currently has the top season times in the Northeast Conference in the 100 (10.62)

MEN'S BASKETBALL Shepherd 80, Fairmont State 75 FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Jonathan Motichka led all scorers with 27 points and Derek Gallagher came off the bench to add 15 points and nine rebounds for Shepherd in a WVIAC upset over Fairmont State (18-8, 11-8). Liki Turner had 12 points and Tucker Lucas scored 10 points for the Rams (12-14, 11-8). WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Shepherd 55, Fairmont State 53 FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Krissy Grosselin led Shepherd in scoring with 18 points as the Rams edged Fairmont State (16-9, 13-6)

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Shepherd 68, Fairmont State 50 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Katie Warehime had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead Shepherd, which broke out of a halftime tie to outscore WVIAC opponent Fairmont State (9-8, 6-4), 41-23 in the second half. Krissy Grosselin scored 14 points, Colleen Shumaker and Katie Biggs each added 12 and Jerica Hewett had seven rebounds for the Rams (9-10, 6-6). WOMEN'S SOCCER Mary Washington 4, Hood 1 FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Freshman Carlie Colella, a North Hagerstown graduate, scored the only goal for Hood College (10-7-1, 3-5) in a Capital Athletic Conference loss to Mary Washington (8-5-5, 4-1-3). Colella's goal was her 10th of the season. COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL Shepherd 3, Fairmont State 1 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Lauren Jeschelnik had 11 kills and 17 digs to lead Shepherd University to a 25-20, 12-25, 25-23, 25-20 victory in the West Virginia Conference.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Tyler Lazear might have finished one touchdown pass short of a record, but all the Shepherd University quarterback will remember is finishing one shy of a win. Lazear threw for 315 yards and four touchdowns Saturday, but the Rams blew a 21-point lead and fell 46-42 to visiting Fairmont State as quarterback Vick Bradford hooked up with Perry Baker for four touchdowns to fuel the comeback. Lazear and the Rams had chances to in the final two minutes to reclaim the lead but failed.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The Shepherd University women's basketball team had a definite battle plan on Thursday. The Rams called in the guards and claimed total victory over Fairmont State. The reward? Not one, but three celebrations. Shepherd's backcourt totally outclassed Fairmont - forcing the Falcons into 21 turnovers, including 14 off steals - to knock off Division II's No. 25 team and claim the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's regular season title with a 79-66 victory at the Butcher Center.

The Shepherd University baseball team was picked to win the West Virginia Conference's Northern Division this season. West Virginia State is the favorite to claim the conference championship as the Yellow Jackets were the top pick on 6 of the 14 ballots returned by league head coaches. Concord earned three first-place votes, while Shepherd and Pitt-Johnstown got two nods each and Alderson-Broaddus received the final vote for the top position. West Virginia Conference baseball will split into three divisions this season as Seton Hill is added to the league schedule.
