JUNE 2, 1921-APRIL 12, 2010 BOONSBORO, Md. - Sara K. (Yates) Evans, 88, of Boonsboro, Md., passed peacefully on Monday, April 12, 2010, at Charlotte's Home in Boonsboro. Born June 2, 1921, in Rockingham, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Sul P. and Pauline (Robbins) Yates. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, William R. Pumphrey Sr. and William H. Evans. Sara was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church. During World War II, Mrs. Evans worked for the railroad and then was employed as the executive secretary to the county commissioner in Prince George's County.

Anita S. Worley, 82 SEPT. 25, 1926-MARCH 19, 2009 BOONSBORO - Anita S. Worley, 82, of Boonsboro, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Fahrney-Keedy Home. Born Sept. 25, 1926, in Boonsboro, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Leila Michael Stouffer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Worley. She retired from the National Institutes of Health, as an executive secretary, at the age of 70. She was a member of Georgetown Lutheran Church in Washington, D.C. She is survived by two cousins, OraLee Stoner of Severna Park, Md., and Patricia Getridge of Boonsboro.

-AUG. 21, 2011 Virginia E. Householder, 88, of Palm City, Fla., died Aug.  21, 2011, at Palm City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.   Born in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she had been a resident of Palm City for 31 years, coming from Hagerstown, Md. She was a homemaker. She also had been an executive secretary for the Washington County, Md., school board. Survivors include her husband, Virgil R. Householder Sr. of Palm City; sons, Virgil R. Householder Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., and Van R. Householder of Bonita Springs, Fla.; a daughter, Vicki Hornbecker of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The Washington County Board of Social Services on May 23 elected new officers for 2005-06. They include Nicole R. Houser, chair, Roland F. Smith, vice chair, and Spence Perry, secretary. As leader of the board, Houser brings years of community experience and has been a member of the Washington County Board of Social Services since 2001. She is employed as executive secretary of The Greater Hagerstown Committee Inc. She currently serves as a board member of the Leadership Hagerstown Alumni Association.

JUNE 29, 1952-FEB. 11, 2009 Stephane Anne Foley Crotty Killgore Chilcote, 56, of 1110 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at her home. Born June 29, 1952, in St. Joseph, Mo., she was the daughter of the late William F. and Vera G. Way Foley. She had previously worked as an executive secretary for Millstone Coffee in Exton, Pa. She is survived by her husband, Raymond E. Chilcote, whom she married Aug. 2, 1989; two daughters, Victoria J. Mohr and Elizabeth G. Rossi, both of Hagerstown; six sons, James W. Killgore II of Maugansville and Shawn M. Chilcote, Chad C. Chilcote, Brad Chilcote, Kelly Chilcote and Raymond Chilcote Jr., all of Philadelphia; one sister, Brenda C. Boyd of Hagerstown; one brother, Stephen F. Foley of Sadburyville, Pa.; and 13 grandchildren.

MAY 25, 1920-JULY 15, 2009 Irma Ruth Mowry, 89, of 1202 Hillbrook Drive in Hagerstown, Md., passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at her home. Born Tuesday, May 25, 1920, in Altoona, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Sherman G. Amick and Stella Hanks Amick. She was a school teacher for many years, and later worked as an executive secretary. She was a member of Hagerstown Seventh-day Adventist Church. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, George C. Mowry; and one sister, Lois Jean Reighard of Altoona.

Shirley (Haycraft) Taylor, 82, of Falling Waters, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Quincy Village in Waynesboro, Pa. Born April 26, 1929, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Everett Haycraft and Mary (Windsor) Haycraft. She was an executive secretary for Comsat Labs and a member of the Lutheran church in Willamsport, Md. She is survived by her two sons, Steven L. Miller of Greencastle, Pa., and Kenneth A. Miller of Norfolk, Va.; and two grandchildren, Jason P. Miller of Waynesboro and Eleni J. Miller of Norfolk.

Sonya W. Matchett, 79 DEC. 2, 1929-APRIL 7, 2009 ZULLINGER, Pa. - Sonya W. Swenson Matchett, 79, of Zullinger and formerly of Chevy Chase, Md., died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Chambersburg Hospital. Born Dec. 2, 1929, in Detroit, she was the daughter of the late Gustav V. and Constance Thorstenson Swenson. Her husband, Eugene J. Matchett Jr., died in 1969. They were married in 1948. She was a 1948 graduate of Bethesda Chevy Chase High School in Maryland.

JUNE 30, 1926-NOV. 18, 2009 Ramona Elaine Stains, 83, formerly of 10904 Allen Ave., Hagerstown, Md., died on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at her residence, Homewood Pines Apartment Building, Williamsport, Md. Born June 30, 1926, in Welsh Run, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Mody F. and Jeannette Culler Rock. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Leroy Stains, on Aug. 11, 1989. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She graduated from Greencastle High School in 1944, and from Hagerstown Business College in 1945.

Washington County schools Superintendent Wayne F. Gersen has lost his second bid in as many weeks for a superintendent's job with a Pennsylvania school system. Cumberland Valley School District officials said Monday night the district's assistant superintendent, Anthony Colistra, had been named to the top job. Gersen had been a candidate for the post, according to Betty Heckert, executive secretary to the superintendent. Located in Mechanicsburg, Pa., about 12 miles from Harrisburg, the 12-school system has about 7,400 students, Heckert said.

Jane (Baker) Long, 90, of Hagerstown, Md., died Sunday, May 26, 2013. Born in 1923 in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Clinton Baker and Blanche (Conrad) Baker Rouzer. Mrs. Long was a 1940 graduate of Hagerstown High School, and attended Hagerstown Business College. She was employed as a secretary by Pangborn Corp., and later as an executive secretary to the president of Jamison Door Co. In the 1980s, she taught English as a second language at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Doris Elsie Ziehl, 94, went to be with Jesus on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at the Coffman Nursing Home in Hagerstown, Md. Born in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elsie Oliveri. She was the loving wife of the late Norman J. Ziehl and sister of the late Melvin, Johnny and Joe Oliveri. She was employed by Woodward and Lothrop for 17 years and then worked as an executive secretary for Verizon (formerly C&P Telephone Company) for over 30 years. During that time she served with the Pioneers making little stuffed animals for the children at Children's Hospital in D.C. While living with her niece and nephew, Joyce and Larry Coffin in Mercersburg, Pa., she participated in the Hagerstown Community Bible Study and attended Tri-State Fellowship before going to Coffman Nursing Home in June of 2012.

Oleta (Conway) Kreiger, 81, of Cresaptown, Md., passed away at her daughter's home on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012. Born Jan. 31, 1931 in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles W. Conway Sr. and Clara Mae (Robertson) Conway. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Donald Kreiger Sr., in February of 2012; and three brothers, Donald Conway, George Conway and Charles Conway.  Mrs. Kreiger was a member of Cresaptown United Methodist Church, where she was involved with many areas of the church, including housekeeping.

When it comes to living life to the fullest, it might be hard to outdo Doris Merson. She has been a wife, mother, executive secretary, emergency medical technician, firefighter, actress, tour guide and volunteer. Nothing would make the Smithsburg woman happier than adding a few more jobs to her resume. "But at the age of 83, I know I can't do that," she said. "Still, it doesn't stop me from thinking about it. " Merson said she has always loved being active and involved.

JAN. 6, 1932-JULY 24, 2009 BOONSBORO - Olive J. Alder, 77, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 24, 2009, at her home in Benevola. Born Jan. 6, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Ernest R. and Ethel G. (Reeder) Baker Dorman. Her husband, James R. Alder, preceded her in death in 1996. Mrs. Alder was a member of the Boonsboro High School class of 1949, and a graduate of Hagerstown Business College. She retired as the executive secretary of M.P. Moller Inc. Olive was a lifelong member of Benevola United Methodist Church, where she served as the secretary and treasurer for more than 15 years.
