AUG. 9, 1921-FEB. 15, 2009 TANEYTOWN, Md. -- Edward Everett Hess, 87, of Taneytown, Md., died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Md. Born Aug. 9, 1921, in Taneytown, he was the son of the late Ralph Everett and Edna Viola Harner Hess. He was the husband of the late Betty Virginia Shankle Hess, who died in February 2007. He was a farmer, worked as a mechanic for John Deere of Kingsdale, Pa., and was a tool and die maker at Black & Decker in Hampstead, Md. He was retired from Random House Publishing Co. in Westminster.

A 23-year-old Everett, Pa., man was critically injured Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident on Md. 63 south of Interstate 70, Maryland State Police said. The man, whose name was not released, was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was listed in critical condition as of Thursday about 8 p.m., police said. He was a passenger in a 1991 Pontiac Grand Am that collided with a 2006 GMC Savanna van about 12:54 p.m., police said. The Pontiac was attempting to cross southbound Md. 63 (Greencastle Pike)

BOYS BASKETBALL THURMONT, Md. - North Hagerstown battled back from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to take a one-point lead with 15 seconds remaining, but Catoctin's Kyle Beard made two free throws with 3 seconds left to give Catoctin a 60-59 victory Tuesday night. Allen Sandberg led North (3-9) with 17 points - including four 3-pointers - and three blocks. Brent Bell had 11 points and seven rebounds, Anthony Lee had eight assists, Joe Mattei had seven rebounds and Alec Nelson had four steals.
