Downtown Hagerstown drivers can expect delays where Washington and Franklin streets intersect Jonathan, Prospect and Walnut streets this week as crews continue to upgrade traffic signals. Lanes and entire roads will be closed this weekend, May 30 and 31, near North Potomac and West Franklin streets, according to the city engineering department. Parking restrictions will be posted on streets near construction zones 24 hours in advance. Vehicles in violation will be towed.

The Washington County Division of Public Works, Capital Projects Engineering Department, said Thursday that Lehmans Mill Road at Md. 60 -- Leitersburg Pike -- is scheduled to reopen to through traffic at 2 p.m. Friday, May 14. The road has been closed to allow the stream bank stabilization and roadway reconstruction project along Antietam Creek.

After more than 19 years with the Washington County Engineering Department, Chief Engineer Terrance P. McGhee resigned Tuesday to take a job in the private sector, according to a press release. McGhee is taking a position with Bechtel Corp., where he will work on a project in Tyson's Corner, Va., to extend the Washington, D.C., Metrorail to Dulles International Airport. His last day with the county will be Feb. 15. "The department has come a long way since I first took over.

Work crews are excavating on Lanvale Street to install new sanitary sewer lines, according to the Hagerstown Engineering Department. If the weather is good, employees of Charles E. Brake Inc. will work on the road until Friday. Lanvale Street, which is in Hagerstown's West End, will be closed to traffic near Summer Street. A detour will send traffic to Elgin Boulevard and West Washington and Ross streets. Emergency vehicles won't be able to pass through the closed area.

Garbage collection schedules in Hagerstown will change because of the observance of the Independence Day holiday on Monday, July 5. Collection will be as follows: North End collection: Set out Monday evening for Tuesday collection. South End collection: Set out Tuesday evening for Wednesday collection. Citywide yard waste: Set out Wednesday evening for Thursday collection. There will be no paper recycling pickup that week. Underpass Way at Valley Mall will be closed to all through traffic from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. from Monday though Nov. 22 to make repairs to the Halfway Boulevard bridge, according to a Washington County Engineering Department press release. The bridge was damaged when it was struck by a container truck in July . Appropriate detours will be posted and maintained. Traffic flow on Halfway Boulevard should not be affected, but it will not be possible for traffic to go under the bridge during those hours.

The first block of Summit Avenue, between Antietam and Washington streets, will be closed from 5 to 9 p.m. today due to construction work at the Washington County Courthouse Annex, according to a press release from the Washington County Engineering Department. Air-conditioning equipment will be removed from the roof of the building by crane During this time period no one will be allowed to enter or occupy the Courthouse Annex Building at 24 Summit Ave., the release says.
