Wesley Loveless is only 18 years old, yet when the Volunteer Fire Co. of Halfway is called to a scene, he sometimes is the officer in charge. As a sixth-generation firefighter, Loveless has plenty of experience. "To me, firefighting is an amazing thing," Loveless said.

BOONSBORO - One person was killed and seven others were injured in a three-car accident Sunday afternoon on U.S. 40 near Mount Lena Road, according to Maryland State Police. Estrella Caraballo, 84, of Boonsboro, died at Washington County Hospital and Darlene Sue Crowley, 54, also of Boonsboro, was in serious condition in the intensive care unit Sunday night, police said. A white Nissan was westbound on U.S. 40 when it stopped to make a left turn onto Mount Lena Road at about 5 p.m., State Police Trooper Travis Brown said.

martinsburg@herald-mail.com RANSON, W.Va. - James O. Carter Jr. spends his days behind the wheel of a large truck hauling around powdered cement, and many of his nights driving an ambulance. Carter was unanimously nominated as Blue Ridge Mountain Fire Co.'s Volunteer Emergency Medical Service Provider of the Year. He was one of several EMS providers, firefighters, police officers and others recognized Tuesday night during the fifth annual Public Service Recognition Banquet sponsored by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce.

The Smithsburg Emergency Medical Service (SEMS) annual awards banquet was held Feb. 27 at Savoy Catering Service in Waynesboro, Pa. During 2009, SEMS volunteers responded to 1,125 calls for service, but also logged a total of 16,502 hours of volunteer service by 37 active members, according to a news release from Deputy Chief James Ulrich. The top 10 members with logged hours of service and the most call responses were recognized, as well as the following: o Advanced Life Support provider (Medic/Paramedic)

Burgan-Aponte-Rivera Jennifer Lynn Burgan and Edwin Aponte-Rivera Jr. announce their engagement. Miss Burgan is the daughter of William and Eleanor Burgan, both of Clear Spring. She is a 1998 graduate of Clear Spring High School and received an associate's degree from Hagerstown Community College in 2001. She is a kindergarten assistant teacher at Fort Detrick, Child Development Center in Frederick, Md. Mr. Aponte-Rivera Jr. is the son of Edwin and Yvonne Aponte-Rivera, both of Westminster, Md. He is a 1999 graduate of South Carroll High School.

SMITHSBURG ? For at least 20 years, Washington County has not had anyone carrying the title of Miss Washington County Fire Prevention. But this year, Jennifer Barciz has been tapped for the position and will compete this summer in Ocean City with counterparts from other Maryland fire companies. A member of Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services, Barciz said she got interested while attending a Maryland State Firemen's Association convention in Ocean City. "I saw these young women in sashes getting awards," Barciz said, prompting her to look into what it was all about.

Ronald L. “Ronnie” Van Meter Jr., age 37, died Monday, April 8, 2013, at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa. Born Sept. 4, 1975, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of Ronald L. Van Meter Sr. and Bonnie J. Crusan Van Meter of Hancock and son-in law of Eddie and Sylvia Zimmerman Moats. He was a 1993 graduate of Hancock High School. He was employed with U.S. Silica, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., as a control room operator. He was a lieutenant with the Hancock Volunteer Fire Company, where he was a member for 20 years.

Years ago, my husband, Darin, and I booked a short trip with a travel agency. We would be flying to Texas to see a Redskins football game against the Dallas Cowboys. When we arrived at the airport, we were informed by the agency that our flight had been changed. After some confusion, we boarded the correct plane for the long trip. Since our new flight was now overbooked, they did not have enough meals to feed everyone, including us. To compensate for this, they offered free peanuts and alcoholic beverages to anyone not receiving a meal.

Historical Society to meet March 27 The Maugansville Historical Society will meet Thursday, March 27, at the First National Bank of Greencastle, Maugans Avenue Branch, at 2 p.m. Richard Helfrich will speak on "Relics and Recollections of the Hagerstown Fair" following the business meeting. Interested area residents are invited to attend. Spaghetti feed set for Saturday, April 5 The Maugansville Fire Co. and the Ruritan Club will have a spaghetti feed at the fire station on Saturday, April 5, from 3 to 7 p.m. All proceeds benefit the fire company.

WAYNESBORO, PA. - A pair of accidents Monday afternoon in the Borough of Waynesboro seriously injured three people, one of whom was flown to Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center for treatment. A man was hit while walking across South Potomac Street within half a block of the site of a fatal pedestrian accident earlier this month. "We got in to stop traffic at the alley, and we got dispatched to the other one," said Sgt. Mike Bock of the Waynesboro Police Department. Two Wayne Heights, Pa., people were in a newer-model Chevrolet Impala that pulled out of McDonald's, crossed Myrtle Avenue, went through a fence and fell 14 feet to the CVS Pharmacy parking lot below, Bock said.
