Like modern-day cavemen, Josh and Jeremiah Clemmer set out early Saturday morning, snagged dinner and set off for home. But not without the conventions and amusements of the contemporary fishing tournament. The Clemmer boys were among nearly 400 people gathered Saturday for MIHI's ninth annual Fishin' Frenzy at Pangborn Park. "They're gonna have trout for dinner. Probably fileted and broiled," said Dave Zook, 68, of Hagerstown. Zook had accompanied Josh, Jeremiah and their mother, Pam Clemmer, 42, to the event.

Nothing could stop the Maryland District 1 Little League Home Run Derby from being held Sunday. Not even Mother Nature. The skies opened up seven batters into the Derby and halted competition for nearly 90 minutes before it resumed. It took approximately 10 volunteers, three Shop Vacs, a bevy of shovels and rakes, some additional dirt and even a Gatorade bottle to get the water off the field so the Derby could resume. “The kids really wanted to (finish the competition)

Washington County girls continued to leave opponents scratching their heads Saturday at the Maryland State Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Morgan State University. Boonsboro held off Harford Tech 108-100 to win the Class 1A girls title, which has been brought home by a county team 15 of the last 16 years. It’s the Boonsboro girls’ eighth title overall and first since 2005. “This was our goal since the beginning of the season,” Boonsboro coach Becky Walter said.

The Franklin County (Pa.) Department of Emergency Services joined emergency medical services organizations from throughout the county to recognize EMS Week and to educate visitors of fire and safety hazards. The department, including members of the Community Emergency Response Team, met more than 150 people at Lowe's stores in Waynesboro, Pa., and Chambersburg on May 20 and 21. The team members presented a display of their response capabilities and distributed safety information on fire prevention, fall prevention and what to do in the event of an emergency.

Preliminary public safety budget requests to the Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday ranged from less than a half a percent increase from Sheriff Douglas Mullendore to a nearly double-digit increase sought by Division of Emergency Services Director Kevin Lewis. Mullendore is requesting $22,767,750 in fiscal 2012, which begins July 1, an increase of 0.46 percent over his 2011 budget. The biggest portion of the sheriff's budget is more than $11.4 million for the Washington County Detention Center.

MARCH 24, 1933-FEB. 16, 2011 CLEAR LAKE, Iowa — Phyllis Ellen Martin Smith-Solony, 77, of Clear Lake, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at the home of her daughter in Mason City, Iowa. Phyllis was born March 24, 1933, in Hagerstown, Md., to the late Henry J. Martin and the late Mabel C. Messersmith-Martin. She is survived by her children, Jan L. Sensenbaugh of Hagerstown, Phillip R. Smith and wife, Brenda, of Newton, N.C., Fred C. Solony and wife, Nancy, of Mason City, Michael T. Solony of Las Cruses, N.M., Tonya D. Carlson and husband, Alan, of Duluth, Minn.

Austin Rinker touched thousands of people, many of whom don’t even know him. Through his career in emergency medical services and an interest in teaching emergency personnel, his impact on the lives of others was widespread. “I would say he’s probably taught all the paramedics in Washington County, if not Western Maryland,” said Cpl. Jeff White, reserve officer coordinator for Maryland Natural Resources Police. Born and raised in Hagerstown, Austin graduated from St. Maria Goretti High School and Hagerstown Community College before earning bachelor’s degrees from the University of Baltimore and Frostburg State University.

SMITHSBURG -- The Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Co. had 39 calls for service in August, according to the fire department's regular monthly report. The department responded to three structure fires, three vehicle accidents with injuries, one accident involving pedestrians and three brush fires, according to the report. The department also assisted neighboring counties three times, the report said. Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services responded to more than 100 calls in August and department officials expect to handle more than 1,000 calls this year, according to the department's regular monthly report.

SMITHSBURG --Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services Inc. responded to 101 calls in July, according to Deputy Chief James Ulrich. The department responded to 64 medical calls and 26 trauma calls, which included 14 vehicle, motorcycle and pedestrian accidents, Ulrich said. A burn patient was flown to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center by Trooper 3, the Frederick, Md.-based Maryland State Police Aviation Command helicopter, and the department assisted on five fire calls, including four structure fires, Ulrich said.

Having been sent to the losers' bracket on June 26 in a four-inning 14-4 loss to Valley, National returned the favor in the losers' bracket final, knocking off Valley 14-7. National reaches the championship round and will visit Clear Spring on Monday at 6 p.m. If National wins, it will host a final game against Clear Spring on Tuesday at 6. "We are honored to reach the championship game," said National manager David Hutzler.
