Devin R. Witman, 21, of Hagerstown, passed suddenly from this life Friday, April 26, 2013. Born Aug. 22, 1991, in Harrisburg, Pa., he was the son of Sandy C. (Hines) White of Hagerstown and the late Timothy A. Witman. Devin was at his happiest when he was motorcycle riding and working on computers. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his half sister, Destiny D. Witman of Texas; his maternal grandmother, Linda Warrenfeltz and her husband, Pete, of Boonsboro, Md.; his maternal stepgrandmother, Bonnie Hines and partner, Matt, of Emmitsburg, Md.; his aunt, Christy Webber of Hagerstown; and his uncles, Dwayne Hines of Keedysville, Md. and Jamie Hines of Waynesboro, Pa. He also is survived by several cousins.

Mrs. Margaret Lorraine Stely, 85, of Hagerstown, died Saturday, March 30, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown. She was the wife of the late John “Shorty” Irwin Stely. Born in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 20, 1928, she was a daughter of the late George Lucian and Margaret Frances Goodwin Swindell. She is survived by five children, John Stely Jr. and wife Joann, Millville, N.J., Ken Stely and wife Teresa, Smithsburg, Ed Stely and wife Carol, Middletown, Richard Stely and wife Debbie, Emmitsburg, and Linda Stely Moore and fiancé Lenny Jacobson, Pottstown, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

A canine member of a Frederick County, Md., family is enjoying puppyhood with treats, walks and massages, but he will someday have a big job as a service dog. The McCauleys brought Gibson, a black Labrador, home about 10 months ago. He is their third dog through Guiding Eyes for the Blind. “He's been the easiest to work with,” Jim McCauley said. “He's very connected with people.” Guiding Eyes for the Blind is seeking new puppy raisers in Frederick and Washington counties in Maryland, as well as Southcentral Pennsylvania.

Flora Blanche Dubel Sayler, 89, of Emmitsburg, Md., died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at St. Catherine Nursing Center, Emmitsburg. The family will receive friends at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, Emmitsburg, Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., and at Elias Evangelical Lutheran Church, Emmitsburg on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Elias Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Aug. 19, from 3 to 4 p.m. at St. Rita Parish, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Sunday, Aug. 19, at 4 p.m. at the church. Rosita Patricia Everly Poole Hoffman Hillman, 76, of Emmitsburg, Md., passed away Saturday, April 21, 2012, at St. Catherine's Nursing Home, Emmitsburg. Born April 2, 1936, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Cyril and Mary Ellen (Shank) Shupp. Mrs. Hillman retired as a retail associate and previously worked as a secretary for legal offices. She is survived by two daughters, Cheri Lynn (Poole) West of Hagerstown and Pamela Christine (Everly) Smith of Tyngsborough, Mass.

Martin "Mike" H. VanWestenberg, 62, of Fairfield, Pa., passed away Feb. 25, 2012, at Gettysburg Hospital. Mike is survived by his wife, Sandy; his son, Michael; his son, William and wife, Kacy; his son, Robert and wife, Amanda; his stepdaughter, Kim Boehnlein and husband, Ray; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Becky Ropp and husband, Frank; two nephews; one niece; and one great-niece. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Martin and Joellen VanWestenberg; and a daughter, Vicky.

Teresa Larue Ott Howard, age 47, of Emmitsburg, Md., died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, at the Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster, Md., following a 10-year battle with cancer. Born Nov. 24, 1963, in Gettysburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Leatrice (Coe) Ott of Emmitsburg and the late Thomas Ott. She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Kenneth E. Howard. Teresa worked as a machine operator at Arcadia Graphics in Fairfield, Pa., and later in the bakery department of Jubilee Foods in Emmitsburg. She enjoyed sewing and spending time with her family.

The National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton hosted more than 400 visitors Oct. 2 for its annual Sea Services Pilgrimage. Members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine, along with family members and friends, gathered at the Basilica in Emmitsburg to honor St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the Catholic Church's official Patroness of the Sea Services. The pilgrimage has been drawing hundreds of visitors to the shrine for the last 34 years. “The Mass is extraordinary,” said Adm. Watkins, who in 1977 successfully petitioned the Vatican to establish St. Elizabeth Ann's patronage of the Sea Services.

Numerous roads in the Thurmont and Emmitsburg area of Frederick County were closed due to high water, according to a news release released at about 1 p.m. Friday by the Maryland State Police Frederick barrack. Further closures due to the inclement weather are expected, the release said. Portions of Frederick County including Thurmont, Emmitsburg and Walkersville were under a flash-flood warning effective until 3:15 p.m., the National Weather Service reported.
