OBITUARIES
December 2, 2012
Helen Hammer, 93, formerly of Hagerstown, died Nov. 24, 2012, at Green Valley Nursing Home in Perry, Okla. She was married to Elwood Hammer, who preceded her death in 1987. She is survived by two daughters, Sandy Bilby, and Jo Ahalt and husband, Rudell; and a son, Kenneth Hammer and wife, Cindy. There will be a celebration of remembrance Dec. 8, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Bethel UCC in Elkton, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethel United Church of Christ, 2451 Bethel Church Road, Elkton, VA 22827.

LANHAM, Md. - The Heritage Academy boys basketball team backed up its title in the Mason Dixon Christian conference with a 58-55 victory over Elkton Christian on Saturday to capture the Maryland Christian State championship. In concluding the best-ever season at Heritage, the Eagles (25-2) snapped Elkton's 17-game winning streak with clutch 3-point shooting in the fourth quarter and a big 1-and-1 free-throw conversion by Steve Barthalow to secure the championship. Heritage took the lead for good at the outset of the fourth period at 42-40 on a bucket by Hamilton Stamper, who was the tournament's most valuable player.

Rosa Lee Oxendine, 89, of Charles Town, W.Va., died Friday, June 22, 2012, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va. The service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Charles Town Baptist Church. Brian Hotaling will officiate. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Cherry Hill Cemetery, Elkton, Md.

When it all was over, Levi Taylor circled the Jay W. Stouffer Field while carrying the Maryland State flag. It was almost fitting. Taylor was Conococheague's flag-bearer on Friday. Taylor hit two home runs and drove in seven runs in the his final two at-bats to lift Conococheague to another dramatic victory, this time a 14-10 heart-pounder over Elkton to win the Maryland State 11-12 Tournament championship at Maugansville Little League. Conococheague scored 12 of its 14 run via homers, including a grand slam by Robert Carr in the third inning that allowed it to win its second state title in three years.

Saturday, July 23, 2011 YOUTH BASEBALL WALDORF, Md. - Maugansville took the plunge just for the chance to take a dip on Saturday. Corey Staubs drove in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning and Tyler Shindle pitched two innings of relief to nail down a 8-7 victory over Elkton in the opening game of the Maryland Senior League Tournament. “We started out strong with four runs in the first. The kids knew we really needed this one,” said Maugansville manager Rich Montgomery.

Halfway smashed three two-run home runs and survived a late rally by Elkton on Sunday for a 9-8 victory in the Maryland 10-11 Little League State Tournament winners' bracket semifinals at West End Little League. Halfway will face Delmar tonight at 6 in the winners' bracket final. Both teams scored four runs in the first inning. Elkton's Austin Ross hit a three-run homer in the top half, and Halfway's Mike McCook hit his own three-run shot in the bottom half. Blake Gooden scored Gavin Thompson with an RBI single to give Halfway a 5-4 advantage in the fourth.

No matter the temperature, the show must go on. Saturday is the beginning of the Maryland State Little League Baseball 11-12 Tournament, hosted by Maugansville Little League. The tournament is the next rung on the ladder for seven teams in their hopeful climb toward the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pa. Opening ceremonies begin at 10:30 a.m. at Jay W. Stouffer Field, and the tournament gets under way at 1 p.m. District 6 champ South Caroline meets District 7 champ Northern Calvert in the first game.
