OBITUARIES
April 12, 2011
JUNE 1, 1923-APRIL 11, 2011 Frederick John Wark, 87, of Silver Spring, Md., and formerly of Boonsboro and Huntington Station, N.Y., died Monday, April 11, 2011, at the Washington Home in Washington, D.C. Born June 1, 1923, in Huntington Station, N.Y., he was the son of the late Alexander and Rose (Von Fricken) Wark. His wife, Lois Eleanor (Bave) Wark, preceded him in death in 2006. Mr. Wark was a veteran World War II, having served with the U.S. Army. During his military service, he was the recipient of the Air Medal with two oak-leaf clusters, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon and two Bronze Stars.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee is planning a fundraiser luncheon Sunday, March 20, at 3:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, 131 North Ave. in Hagerstown. The North Hagerstown High School Hub Band Boosters Club will hold a money bonanza Saturday, April 30, at the Elks Lodge on Robinwood Drive. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and a buffet dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Drawings will begin at 8 p.m., followed by dancing. Every 10th ticket wins $40 and the jackpot will be $1,000. Williamsport Blue Band Boosters will hold a Longaberger and Vera Bradley bingo event Sunday, March 6, at the Elks Lodge on Robinwood Drive in Hagerstown. Tickets cost $25 per person and include the meal and 26 games of bingo. Refreshments, raffles and tip jars will be available to purchase. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., dinner will be provided by the Elks Lodge at 12:30 p.m. and bingo begins at 1:30. To order tickets, call LeeAnn Tardino at 301-991-5946. APRIL 12, 1932-FEB 10, 2011 Ruben Roy Hoyle, 78, of Hagerstown, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, at his home. Born April 12, 1932, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of the late Howard Edward Hoyle and Frances Mae Heiston Hoyle Hess. Mr. Hoyle graduated from Hagerstown High in 1950, and attended Hagerstown Junior College. Later, he served three years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, Army Security Agency at Fort Buckman, Sobe, Okinawa. Later, he attended U.S. Army School of Drafting, Fort Belvoir, Ga. Mr. Hoyle was employed with the City of Hagerstown for 29 years, and retired in 1986 as assistant city engineer.

JUNE 29, 1936-JAN. 14, 2011 Kevin L. Spessard Sr., 74, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born June 29, 1936, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Victor Roy and Ruth Violet (Coldsmith) Spessard. Kevin was a 1954 graduate of Hagerstown High School. He was employed by Western Maryland-CSX Railroad, retiring after 42 years of service in 1997. He was a 50-year member of Grace United Methodist Church in Hagerstown; the We-Brothers Sunday School Class, and he served numerous years as chairman of the Trustee Board, serving on the Finance Committee, Investment Committee, Men’s Choir, and the Security Team of the church.

OCT. 7, 1928-SEPT. 23, 2010 Donald Lee Lewis of Davenport, Fla., and Hagerstown, Md., passed away Sept. 23, 2010, at Washington County Hospital. Born Oct. 7, 1928, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Ellsworth and Sara Wade Lewis. He was a graduate of Allegany High School and Frostburg State College, where he obtained his bachelor of science and master of education degrees. He retired from teaching, having served at Boonsboro High School for 30 years. Don enjoyed working with the community youth by coaching football, baseball, basketball, track and field, and soccer.
