Taryn H Shank, a graduating senior at North Hagerstown High School, has been awarded the Presidential Scholarship, the highest merit-based scholarship offered, to attend Elizabethtown College as a mathematics major. She has also been accepted into the honors program and will continue her cross country running as a member of the Division III Elizabethtown Blue Jays. She is also a recipient of the Susquehannah Bank Strikeouts for Straight A's Scholarship Program and the Patrick D. Messina Scholarship in recognition of distinguished performance in scholarship, sportsmanship, athletic achievement and great dedication and loyalty to the NHHS cross country team.

Sarah Marie Martin and Richard Samuel Ginn III were married Saturday, June 7, 2008, at Greenstone Apostolic Church in Fairfield, Pa. The bride is the daughter of David and Peggy Martin of Waynesboro, Pa. The bridegroom is the son of Barbara and Richard Ginn Jr. of Leitersburg. The bride is a 1999 graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School. She received a bachelor's degree in 2003 from Elizabethtown College. She is a customer service supervisor with First National Bank of Greencastle.

John Denning Vogel, 65, of Norwood Avenue, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at his home. He was born July 23, 1946, in Harrisburg, Pa., the son of the late Harry Denning Jr. and Helen Beasom Vogel. John is survived by his wife, Katherine "Kate" Maloney Vogel. Mr. Vogel was a graduate of Susquenita High School and Elizabethtown College. For many years he served in the U.S. Army Reserve. John also served for a time as a page in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Whitetail Resort recently chose nine candidates to receive the 11th annual Whitetail Resort Employee Scholarship promoting higher education. Eight candidates received scholarships of $500 each, and one candidate received the third annual Whitetail Resort-Oscar Weller Memorial Employee Scholarship in the amount of $1,000, according to a news release. Students were eligible if they were employees in good standing for the 2012-13 season at Whitetail Resort.  Scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence and Whitetail's company values.

HCC Ray Johns, a retired economics professor who taught at Hagerstown Community College for 25 years, has been named to serve a three-year term on the board of trustees at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. In addition to his work at HCC, Johns spent time abroad as a Fulbright professor of economics in the Ukraine, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and Moldova. He served as an associate professor of economics at Ashland University from 1972 to 1975. He holds degrees from Hagerstown Junior College, now Hagerstown Community College, and the University of Maryland, and served as a visiting fellow in the economics department at Yale University.

Saturday, November 10, 2012 COLLEGE X-COUNTRY INA, Ill. - The Hagerstown Community College men's team finished 14th out of 35 complete teams at the 2012 NJCAA Division I national championships on Saturday at Rend Lake College. The Hawks finished with 452 points. Central Arizona won the title with 51 points, led by individual champion Tod Jackson, who won the 8K race in 25 minutes, 45.5 seconds. Gerald Wayne Spessard II graduated on May 22 from the University of Maryland in College Park. He received a bachelor of science degree from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources with a major in agriculture and resource economics. Spessard played baseball for the Terrapins. He is a 2004 Smithsburg High School graduate. He is the son of Karen Spessard of Hagerstown and Jerry Spessard of Mercersburg, Pa. PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Katherine "Katie" A. Barnhart, a freshman double major in the McAnulty College of Liberal Arts and the School of Education, majoring in Latin and secondary education, has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Duquesne University with a 4.0 average.

Hammond-West Olivia Diane West and Kevin Lewis Hammond were married Saturday, May 16, 1998, at Christ United Methodist Church in Waynesboro, Pa. The bride is the daughter of Thomas and Janis West of Waynesboro and Vicki M. West of Hagerstown. The bridegroom is the son of Arthur and Barbara Hammond of Keedysville. The bride is a 1993 graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School and a 1997 graduate of Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pa., with a bachelor of science degree in occupational therapy.
