MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Close to 500 people gathered for a longstanding Labor Day community breakfast to benefit War Memorial Park in Martinsburg early Monday. "It's kind of the unofficial end-of-summer event," Parks and Recreation Director Steve Catlett said. "You get a good meal, but you are contributing back to the improvement of the park. " The Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation Association hoped to raise about $10,000 from the traditional breakfast of grilled steak, country ham, scrambled eggs, toast, juice and coffee.

Valley held Clear Spring scoreless in the first inning, something no one else had done during the Maryland District 1 Tournament. But Clear Spring scored all its runs in the next three innings to take a 19-1 victory at Aaron Steiner Field and advance to host the district final. "That was our goal, to keep them off the scoreboard in the first," said Valley manager Mike Mathias, whose team will play in the elimination final.

Fog enveloped South Mountain on a recent Sunday morning, and in the mist we saw the beauty of the Appalachian spring. We quickly ran into Old South Mountain Inn, for it was chilly out, and we wanted our morning cup of coffee. We were not disappointed. We were swiftly seated at the far end of the gorgeous glass sunroom and immediately served a cup of strong coffee by our waiter, Bruce. We were the first to arrive for Sunday buffet brunch at 10:30. "Take your time. Help yourself when you are ready," Bruce told us. So we settled in, sipped our coffee and enjoyed the beauty of the spacious room filled with light.

For most children, Easter egg hunts are a traditional event to look forward to on Easter weekend. For four girls at Girls Inc. of Washington County, however, this year they were able to spend Easter Monday hunting for eggs on the White House lawn. This was part of a field trip that took the girls to the White House Easter Egg Roll April 5. The girls enjoyed a beautiful day on the President's lawn, participating in many activities. They first wanted to hunt for eggs and then were able to dye their own eggs to take home.

But which ones we choose have more to do with social norms and commercial availability. Timmons, farmers and other poultry experts agreed to help The Herald-Mail decode the egg.
