kauffman@herald-mail.com So, do you think you could make the putt Phil Mickelson made to win the Masters? Yes, you probably could. Were it not the final hole of the final round of arguably the most important tournament in golf - and were 10,000 "patrons" not watching you with bated breath - you probably could make it at least three of 10 times. Moments like the one Sunday are the reason I've got this job. For if I had never become interested in - nay, addicted to - sports, I wouldn't be writing this column.

kauffman@herald-mail.com HARMANS, Md. - Dustin Kolb picked the perfect time to hit his first home run of 2003. Kolb drilled the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth inning far over the fence in left field, breaking a 4-4 tie and lifting Walkersville to its third state baseball title with a 5-4 victory Thursday over previously undefeated Eastern Tech in the Class 2A final at Joe Cannon Stadium. "That's the first home run I hit this season, and I had a doubt about it," Kolb said.

koelble@herald-mail.com The Walkersville baseball team will try today to advance to the head of the class - Maryland Class 2A, that is. The Lions' task will not be easy as they tangle with unbeaten Eastern Tech in the Class 2A state final at Joe Cannon Stadium in Harmans, Md., with the first pitch scheduled for 3:30. If victorious, Walkersville would add another diamond crown to its 1999 feat. "They (Tech) have two decent pitchers, are a good defensive team and pretty scrappy," first-year Lions coach Mike O'Brien said.
