When I was growing up, the Easter Bunny left me some pretty disappointing baskets. While the neighbor kids got chocolate bunnies, jellybeans and marshmallow chicks, my basket was filled with nutritious snacks. My mom was a health-food nut, and she rarely let us have sweets. In fact, for years she had me convinced those chalky calcium tablets were candy. So you can imagine how incredibly jealous I was the year Mom gave my friend Pam the biggest chocolate bunny I had ever seen. A few days before Easter, Pam and I were horsing around in the yard when I accidentally fell on her, breaking one of her arms.

Might there really be a secret bunny land were the Easter bunny rounds up pastel-colored eggs to drop into the baskets of good little boys and girls? Those wondering where the Easter bunny came from can look to ancient history for clues. Early Christians introduced Christian beliefs by adopting and transforming customs and ancient beliefs that non-Christians were already familiar with, said the Rev. Mark Oldenburg, professor of worship at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg.
