Friday night at Hedgesville, and without a doubt in front of a jam-packed gymnasium, the Eagles will entertain Martinsburg. This will be the third straight season the two West Virginia Class AAA powerhouses have collided at this point in the year with unbeaten records. Martinsburg (7-0) is currently ranked No. 1 in West Virginia. The Bulldogs have steamrolled through the first seven games, outscoring their opponents by an average of 79-54. Ranked No. 2, Hedgesville (9-0) has taken the opposite direction - as it normally does when the chips are down.

South Hagerstown's girls basketball team survived a test from Francis Scott Key on Monday, holding on for a 56-52 victory. “Right now, we're taking (the wins) as long as we can get them,” said South coach Nate Naylor. “We're not used to being the team that everyone wants to beat. We've got to get used to taking everybody's best shot.” FSK (0-4) trailed 43-33 heading into the fourth quarter, but Lily Lawler hit a 3-pointer and Maddie Wilhide made a layup to cut the Eagles' deficit to five, prompting a South timeout.

It's been said that a close loss is much harder to take than a blowout. North Hagerstown football coach Dan Cunningham wasn't going to argue with that on Friday night. The Hubs went into their Maryland Class 3A West semifinal game at Seneca Valley as decided underdogs - a Washington County team against a perennial football power with 12 state titles to its credit. Instead, North pushed the Screamin' Eagles to the limit before coming up short, 12-7. “These kids battled tonight,” Cunningham said.
