HANCOCK - A 20-year-old Frederick, Md., man was killed Friday morning when his car crossed the eastbound lanes and the grass median of Interstate 68 west of Hancock and collided with a highway sign, then a dump truck, Maryland State Police said. Daniel Wright was the driver of the 2001 Toyota Solara, according to Trooper 1st Class C.W. Faith, chief investigator on the 9:20 a.m. accident at the 72-mile marker on the west side of Sideling Hill. Wright wasn't wearing a seat belt, Faith said in a written press release.

charlestown@herald-mail.com HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - A retired police chief from Canada was killed Thursday afternoon when he pulled his car into the path of a dump truck on U.S. 340 at Union Street, said Harpers Ferry Police Chief Donald Buracker. Robert Dyall, 80, of Chateauguay, Quebec, was driving down Union Street and turned onto U.S. 340 when his car was struck by the dump truck about 4:18 p.m., Buracker said. Dyall was a retired police chief from the town of Hamstead in Quebec, Buracker said.

2 seriously hurt in wreck in Pa. CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Two people were seriously injured Monday morning in a two-vehicle wreck on Pa. Route 641 a half-mile east of Pa. 997 in northern Franklin County, state police said. Flown to York Hospital in York, Pa., were Carl Peterson, 68, of 20394 Spring Run Road, Spring Run, Pa., and Clarence Kellogg, 85, of Pittsfield, Pa. Both were listed in serious condition Monday night. Doris Kellogg, 71, also of Pittsfield, was being treated at Chambersburg Hospital for moderate injuries.

An overturned dump truck scattered its load of sand across Black Gap Road near Chambersburg, Pa., Wednesday afternoon. The truck was traveling north when it became involved in a crash with a southbound Nissan Sentra, Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Co. Deputy Chief Curtis Bryan said. There were three people in the Sentra, two of whom got out unaided, but the driver had to be freed from the wreckage and was flown out by helicopter with what Bryan described a moderate injuries.

Maryland State Police were awaiting information to determine whether a Monday morning vehicle accident caused the death of a 71-year-old Allegany County, Md., man or if he experienced a medical problem before the dump truck he was driving overturned on an interstate ramp. Alvin Dale Clise, 71, of Midland, Md., was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which was reported at 8:35 a.m., troopers said. The dump truck was hauling coal eastbound on Interstate 70 and was going onto the ramp to southbound Interstate 81 when Clise lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, troopers said.

FREDERICK, Md. - A West Virginia man was hospitalized after he lost control of his dump truck on Interstate 70 in Frederick County Monday morning, according to State Police in Frederick. Phillip Owen Mechem, 58, of Great Cacapon, W.Va., was driving eastbound on I-70 near Mount Phillip Road when the 1987 Mack dump truck he was driving drifted off the road and hit a guardrail at 9:27 a.m., police said. The truck continued into a wooded area and struck some large pine trees. Rescue personnel worked for 45 minutes to free Mechem from the truck and a section of I-70 was closed for an hour, police said.

SPRING RUN, Pa. -- An 86-year-old Mount Union, Pa., woman died following a two-vehicle crash Wednesday in Franklin County, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release. The woman was driving a 1994 Chevrolet Geo westbound on Pa. 641 at 9:31 a.m. when it entered the path of a 1992 Ford L8000 dump truck traveling southbound on Pa. 75. The dump truck struck the passenger side of the Geo, police said. The woman was extricated from the wreckage by the Fannett-Metal Fire & Ambulance Co. and flown to York (Pa.)
