The eastbound lanes of Dual Highway near Eastern Boulevard were closed for almost two hours Friday afternoon while rescue workers responded to an AmeriGas truck that was leaking propane in the parking lot of a strip mall. The propane leak was reported shortly before 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Always Building at 1201 Dual Highway, which is just east of Eastern Boulevard. Fire Marshal Doug DeHaven said the roadway was re-opened to traffic at 3:30 p.m. DeHaven said employees of businesses in the strip mall, which included a Subway restaurant and a Boost Mobile shop, were evacuated in case the truck exploded.

A Boonsboro man died early Saturday as a result of injuries he sustained in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Dual Highway and Crest View Road, according to a Washington County Sheriff's Office news release. Anthony David Neal, 36, of 20834 Reno Monument Road, was taken to Meritus Medical Center after the 1:47 a.m. crash. He later was pronounced dead at the hospital, troopers said. Neal was driving a 1993 Dodge passenger vehicle east when he passed another vehicle, troopers said.

A former Hagerstown hotel building on Dual Highway will used for the next year as a training site for specialized city and Washington County police exercises. The Hagerstown City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding with the property's owner to allow city police and the county Sheriff's Office to conduct SWAT and county Special Response Team training at the now-vacant Hagerstown Hotel and Convention Center building at 1910 Dual Highway. By a 4-0 vote, the approved MOU contains an agreement, release and waiver liability for the exclusive use of the property by police.

Driver, not police, at fault in crash To the editor: This is in response to Mr. Breeden's letter in the Nov. 15 Herald-Mail. The individual who ran from the police is the person at fault, period. He is the person who ran from the police after they attempted to do their job and make a traffic stop. He is also the person whose vehicle struck another one, causing injuries to the family inside. It is ridiculous to blame the police for doing their jobs and trying to stop someone from running.

The Checkers sign will soon be a familiar sight to motorists on Hagerstown's Dual Highway. The fast-food restaurant chain plans to open an outlet in the city by the end of the month. In addition to burgers, wings and fries, the restaurant will bring jobs to the area. Misbah Malik, who co-owns the franchise with two other business partners - Mahmood Ahmad and Mushtaq Cheema - said this week that the restaurant will employ 14 people full time and will have another 26 part-time employees.

El Paso Mexican Restaurant at 700 Dual Highway in Hagerstown recently was remodeled. The business, owned by the Gomez family, has been in Hagerstown for approximately 20 years. The sunroom and dining area were updated with tile and new seating. The bathrooms have been updated and an outdoor patio was added so customers can dine outside. A man charged with an attempted robbery at Boost Mobile on Aug. 23 has been charged with robbing the same store on Aug. 14, according to Washington County District Court records. Christopher Donovan Heiberger, 27, of 11206A Marbern Road, Hagerstown, was charged last week with attempted armed robbery, attempted robbery, second-degree assault and carrying pepper spray with intent to injure in the Aug. 23 incident at Boost Mobile, 1201 Dual Highway, court records said. In that incident, a man entered the store, demanded cash and tried to spray an employee with pepper spray, police said.

Hagerstown police are searching for a man in a reported armed robbery Tuesday night of a Dual Highway cellphone store, a Washington County Emergency Services dispatcher said. A white man with a handgun entered Boost Mobile at 1201 Dual Highway and robbed the store before fleeing, the dispatcher said. There were no reported injuries and the call for the robbery went out at 6:27 p.m., the dispatcher said. The man, believed to be between 18 and 20 years old, is approximately 6 feet tall and 120 pounds with blond hair.
