Christmas parade set for Dec. 13 SMITHSBURG -- Smithsburg will have its Christmas parade Dec. 13, but Smithsburg Town Council members learned Tuesday night that not everyone is gung-ho about the idea. Council members learned that a person affiliated with a local school band that is expected to be in the parade has concerns about the event. There was concern that any cold weather could affect the ability to play instruments in the parade. Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers said if people don't want to participate, maybe the town will not sponsor it anymore.

BOONSBORO - Police say a Boonsboro man was driving under the influence of alcohol Saturday when he struck another vehicle, fled from police and struck a woman, according to charging documents filed in Washington County District Court. Michael Anthony Yeagy, 48, of 234 S. Main St., faces 13 traffic charges, including DUI, attempting to elude police and failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, according to court records. Boonsboro Police Officer Shawn M. Faith wrote that at about 7 p.m., he saw Yeagy accelerate his pickup truck into the back of another vehicle headed east on North Main Street, then back off. The truck also crossed the center line at least five times, Faith wrote.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - More than a dozen residents of Myrtle Avenue and surrounding streets turned out for Wednesday's Waynesboro Borough Council meeting to talk about overflow high school student parking. The majority supported the students' situation in light of ongoing construction that has limited their parking on Waynesboro Area Senior High School grounds. The patience shown for the parking issues led the council to drastically scale back its plans to restrict parking around the school.

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Greencastle could have a new special events center as soon as Dec. 1 if construction goes as planned at Green Grove Gardens, according to one of the developers. In June 2006, Green Grove Properties L.P. proposed a plan to create an events center called Green Grove Gardens on the farm at 1032 Buchanan Trail East in Greencastle. The plan was approved about a year later by the Antrim Township Board of Supervisors. It is now zoned as community/commercial. Jerry Martin, one of the developers of Green Grove Gardens, which is across from Long Lane Road on Pa. 16, said that for 15 years the land was used as an events center for weddings and concerts.

SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg residents who park at the edges of their driveways, blocking the sidewalk, can expect to get warning notices that doing so is illegal. Town attorney Charles F. Wagaman Jr. said state law makes it illegal to block the edge of the road intended for use by pedestrians, whether or not there is a concrete sidewalk and regardless of whether it is crossed by a driveway.

This guy just came up and cleared our driveway.

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - An Ayr Township woman was killed Friday afternoon when she was struck by a vehicle driven by her husband in the driveway of their home, according to a press release from Pennsylvania State Police in McConnellsburg. Shirley T. Prager, 82, of 946 Meadow Mountain Drive, was killed instantly in the 12:25 p.m. incident, according to the release. Coroner Daryl Heckman listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma, according to the release. Prager and her husband, Philip C. Prager, 84, had just arrived at their home, and she had gotten out of their 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe to retrieve a plastic trash container at the end of their driveway, according to the release.
