National Little League showed that patience at the plate can help batters draw a lot of walks. National drew a total of 10 bases on balls Monday night, including six in a 10-run second inning, on the way to a 12-2 victory over Brunswick in the Maryland 9-10 Section 1 Tournament championship game at Staley Park. "Before the ballgame, I told the boys that we had to have baserunners," National manager Jeff Swope said. "I made them all look at the first pitch. They were too anxious and too excited in the previous games.

CLEAR SPRING - Tyler Byers went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBIs as Conococheague beat Clear Spring 10-5 in the losers' bracket of the Maryland District 1 11-12 All-Star Tournament on Wednesday. Conococheague, which has gone 3-0 since losing to Maugansville in the opening round, is one of four teams left in the 12-team, double-elimination tournament. Conococheague will host Hancock tonight at 6 in a losers' bracket semifinal. Clear Spring was eliminated after going 1-2 in the tourney.

HCC to vie for regional volleyball title By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent While maybe not the favorite in the Region XX Volleyball Tournament, Hagerstown Community College coach Marlys Palmer has high hopes. The tourney begins today at Catonsville Community College and concludes Sunday. "We're not the No. 1 seed, so we're not the favorite team," Palmer said. "But if our team executes the fundamentals and stays mentally tough and confident, then we have a good chance.

Jefferson won its 15th Section I championship on Friday night, defeating the Martinsburg Bulldogs 8-2 and gaining revenge for a 7-6 loss to the Bulldogs in the opening game of the double-elimination tournament. Jefferson (24-4) plays Musselman at home in the West Virginia Region II Tournament semifinals Tuesday at 6:30.

Federal, S. Mountain win, D6 West End and Oakland played like the two undefeated teams they were Saturday in the District 1 11-12 Little League Tournament. So much so, that they sent their winners' bracket final into an extra inning. But West End came out on top with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 2-1 victory and a spot in the championship round of the double-elimination tournament. A blowout was the last thing on anyone's mind. Hagerstown A was locked up in a 5-5 tie with Columbia after 5 1/2 innings in the Colt League West Region Tournament at Hellane Park. A few minutes later, the fallout was everywhere after Hagerstown exploded for 10 runs during the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Columbia by the 10-run rule, 15-5 on Saturday. "We weren't hitting the ball as well before that," Hagerstown's Les Martin said. "Once one player came through, then all of the players started coming through.

Foley, who just completed his first year of leading the Richmond program back to respectability after 11 successful seasons at Providence College, came to Hagerstown last night to address the NJCAA Women's Division II National finalists at the tournament's Tip-Off banquet.

All-Star teams went down the road, made town proud The boys are coming home. Yes, the two Hancock teams - 9- and 10-year-olds and Senior League - played in the "big time" down in the "big city. " Although both teams were eliminated in the double-elimination tournament, their scores were "right up there" and considering the size of Hancock and the size of the teams, playing against teams from much more populous areas, the boys did a great job! What a remarkable summer for Hancock!

MAUGANSVILLE -- Maugansville got on top early and eventually put the game out of reach as it beat Conococheague 11-0 Tuesday night in the winners' bracket final of the Maryland District 1 Junior Tournament. The game was stopped after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule. Maugansville (2-0) will host either Conococheague or South Mountain in the championship round of the double-elimination tournament on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. If Maugansville wins, it clinches the title. If Maugansville loses, it will play another game on Sunday at 5:30 at the field of its opponent.
