COLLEGE BASEBALL Mont.-Germantown 3-10, Hagerstown CC 2-8 GERMANTOWN, Md. - Hagerstown Community College was swept by Montgomery-Germantown, losing both games in the late innings after rallying to tie. Kyle Robinson and Lowell Coats had two hits apiece for HCC as the Hawks fell in eight innings in the first game. Coats had two hits, including a three-run home run in the Hawks' (18-12) five-run sixth inning in Game 2 while Billy Spina added an RBI double.

YOUTH BASEBALL The Hagerstown Colt League All-Stars begin tournament play tonight in Struthers, Ohio, in the Super Regional for the East Zone's West Region. Hagerstown will face Johnstown (Pa.) at 7:30 p.m. "We have a strong team, both offensively and defensively," Hagerstown manager Steve McLucas said. "We only have one player who hit below .450 in league play and a strong pitching staff, with nine boys who can throw. We are looking forward to getting started. " Hagerstown's players are Adam Moore, Aaron Dinterman, Jake Bachtell, Alex Courtney, Riley Stephenson, Drew Deshong, Hunter McKinley, Joe Lashley, Brad Spickler, Luke Toms, Charles Cvijanovich, Austin Yost, Phil Pietro, Jordan Nicewarner, Hunter Szaflarski, Aaron Jones, Matt Daley and Brock Heiston.

Jim Schlossnagle continues to have the magic touch at Texas Christian. The Smithsburg High graduate and the Horned Frogs were awarded their fourth straight NCAA baseball tournament bid as the second seed of the Houston Regional. TCU will play the region's third-seed Baylor on Friday in the four-team, double-elimination tournament. The other two teams in the bracket are Rice, the host-school and the No. 2 national seed, and fourth-seeded Prairie View A&M. TCU has earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament in each of the four seasons that Schlossnagle has been at the school.

The Clear Spring unified sports bocce ball team won the Maryland Division 8 state championship on Thursday. The event was the first unified sports tournament held in the United States, making the title the first for Clear Spring as well as Washington County. The Blazers beat Fort Hill 11-5, Northern Garrett 10-6 and Boonsboro 16-0 to reach the championship round of the double-elimination tournament. Boonsboro beat Clear Spring 16-0 to force a final game, which Clear Spring won, 7-4. In total, 84 schools and more than 600 students participated across all divisions.

A horseshoe tournament with a Halloween twist will be held Saturday, Oct. 29, at Pangborn Park in Hagerstown. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the tournament starts at 10 a.m. Participants are encouraged to come in costume. The double-elimination tournament is open to individual players and doubles teams. Prizes will be awarded to the first- and second-place teams, with games and awards following the tournament. Registration costs $5 for individual players and $10 for doubles teams.

YOUTH BASEBALL Maryland District 1, which encompasses Washington County, will host two Little League Baseball state tournaments beginning Saturday. The 9-10 state tournament will be played at South Mountain Little League in Boonsboro, while the 10-11 state tournament will be played at West End Little League in Hagerstown's Hellane Park. The 9-10 tournament begins with opening-round games at 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m. on Saturday. Clear Spring, the District 1 champion, will play the District 3 champion from Washington, D.C., in the 5 p.m. game.

Local roundup - South Mountain suffers first state loss PERRYVILLE, Md. - South Mountain fell into the loser's bracket of the Maryland 11-12 Little League State Tournament on Sunday, losing a 6-4 decision to Fruitland. Jeremiah Mills had two hits for South Mountain. South Mountain plays an undetermined opponent tonight at 7:30 in the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament. YOUTH LEAGUES Sixth Annual Adam Kees Memorial American 10, National 2 : Jarrell Rodriguez tossed a 12-strikeout, three-hitter while joining and Travis Kelly with a two hit game for American.

It takes only about three hours to drive the 150 or so miles from Hagerstown to South Williamsport, Pa., the site of the Little League World Series. For the teams of 11- and 12-year-olds that take part in the tournaments that lead to the World Series, the journey to South Williamsport is much more difficult than the actual drive. The first steps in that journey will be taken Thursday as the Maryland District 1 tournament begins with four first-round games in Washington County.

LEGION BASEBALL FREDERICK, Md. - Funkstown grabbed a 5-0 lead that held through four innings behind the pitching of Andy Taylor but Gaithersburg rallied to post an 8-7 win on Friday in the Maryland State Tournament at McCurdy Field. Taylor hit a solo home run to open the scoring in the second inning and Phillip Powell added homers in the fourth and sixth innings. Gaithersburg hit Funkstown with a five-run seventh inning, putting the loss on reliever Josh Bussard.

Halfway is heading to the losers' bracket of the Maryland 9-10 Little League Baseball Tournament after being defeated 7-4 by South Caroline Sunday at American Little League. "South Caroline is a good team," Halfway manager Scott Herbert said. "They scored when they had the opportunities. Unfortunately, we didn't get the big hit when we needed it today. All we can do is fight tomorrow. " Halfway will play Arbutus tonight at 6 p.m. in the losers' bracket final. The winner will play South Caroline in the championship round of the double-elimination tournament on Tuesday.
