Charles Gaush, a 79-year-old Korean War veteran, was a resident of Golden Living Center in Hagerstown from October 2007 to December 2007 after breaking his leg and requiring occupational and physical therapy. Upon his discharge from the facility, Gaush was able to return home and resume independent living. Since then, he has returned to Golden Living Center where he participates in the wellness program three days a week. The facility, at 750 Dual Highway, has been part of the Hagerstown community for 38 years.

Take a copy of your military discharge, DD 214 or other service record, VA claim number and any correspondence or rating decision information. Walk-ins are welcome. This is a free service provided to all veterans.

WILLIAMSPORT - A Williamsport company has agreed to pay a $54,900 fine to the Environmental Protection Agency for illegal dumping into the Potomac River and Conococheague Creek, the government said Thursday. [cont. from front page ] The fine stemmed from an August citation that alleged Garden State Tanning violated the Clean Water Act. The settlement averted a court battle over fines totaling $76,000 that the federal Environmental Protection Agency proposed last summer for the company's alleged violations of waste water discharge rules.

Citing more than 250 "major" violations, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection alleged in a lawsuit this week that the public sewer district in Berkeley County has repeatedly violated the state Water Pollution Control Act since 2007. Filed Monday in Berkeley County Circuit Court, the lawsuit asks a Circuit Court judge to stop the Berkeley County Public Service Sewer District from violating state law and a federal pollutant discharge permit program administered by the state environmental department.

Berkeley County's public sewer district claims the state did not allow the utility to collect enough money from customers to make facility improvements to prevent violations that now are the subject of a lawsuit filed by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. The assertion by the Berkeley County Public Service Sewer District is one of several defenses outlined in the utility's response to the DEP lawsuit, which alleges the BCPSSD repeatedly violated the state Water Pollution Control Act (WPCA)

U.S. Army Reserve Master Sgt. Scott Port of Hagerstown was presented the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the third-highest defense award authorized by the Secretary of Defense, for his service during Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. Gen. George W. Casey, commanding officer of the Multi-National Force-Iraq, awarded the medal to Port for exceptionally meritorious achievement during combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq. The award was presented Feb. 1 by Marine Maj. Gen. Mike Ennis of the Department of Defense during a ceremony in Washington, D.C. Port was mobilized for one year on Oct. 1. 2004, and served in Baghdad and Kirkuk, Iraq, as a first sergeant for his unit from Nov. 2, 2004, through April 28, 2005.
