laurae@herald-mail.com A week after Hagerstown philanthropist Nick Giannaris canceled his annual Christmas dinner for the needy and lonely, a group of local doctors has stepped forward to fill the void. But his plans expanded further after Giannaris announced last week that his health would prevent him from hosting the popular Christmas feast at the Four Points Sheraton.

His friend's sister had been complaining about the leftover homemade ham and bean soup their mom had served for dinner. Following the sister's grumbling, his friend's father chimed in. “When I was a kid, we were happy to have leftovers. Every week on payday, we'd go buy rice and some kind of meat.

One man at the Bridge of Life community dinner on Christmas Eve described his holiday situation this way: “I'm right next to homeless and hungry,” said the man, who declined to give his name. He went on to say he has been out of prison for six months, and times on the outside have been tough. The hungry part was satisfied, at least for the time, for that man and about 200 other men, women and children who showed up at the church for turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and other trimmings, and plentiful desserts.
