WAYNESBORO, Pa. - With gentle strokes on the finely tuned strings, the hammer dulcimer emits a familiar tune. Listening to the tune, a lady nearby quietly sings along, "Deck the halls with boughs of holly. " As visitors to Renfrew Christmas walk through the old farmhouse and past Tom Jolin playing carols on the dulcimer, they point to the many decorations and whisper to one another. In every room of the 19th-century house, boughs of holly, sprigs of pine, bowls of fruit and strings of pine cones adorn window sills, mantles and tabletops.

The opening of Hagerstown's new 188-space deck on South Potomac Street is another step forward in the revitalization of downtown Hagerstown and creation of an Arts & Entertainment District. It is also a demonstration of the good things that can happen when local governments and private developers work together. The $3.1-plus million structure was built with the help of major contributions from Bowman Development Corp. and the Washington County Commissioners. Bowman is also renovating properties on the street, some of which have been vacant for many years.

HAGERSTOWN - The new Arts & Entertainment District Parking Deck has been serving select customers for more than a month as the City of Hagerstown tests the fully automated payment system. "You'll be able to put a credit card in and pay that way," City Engineer Rodney A. Tissue said. It will also accept cash and prepaid cards, he said. Tissue said that the city is "very, very close" to opening the five-level deck to the public. It will have 188 spaces and 20 security cameras.

HAGERSTOWN The Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday left out of their budget decisions a $600,000 request for Hagerstown's parking deck and downtown streetscape project. That doesn't mean the city won't get the money, Commissioners President Gregory I. Snook said Wednesday. Snook said the commissioners could make changes to the budget at a later date. Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II asked for the $600,000 last month - $300,000 for this fiscal year and $300,000 in the coming fiscal year.
