Richard D'Ascenzo rejected a five-year plea deal when he was charged with insurance fraud, the Roxbury Correctional inmate explained during a May interview. He's now been in prison for more than 10 years, sentenced to do 45 years for his crimes, D'Ascenzo said. He was convicted of larceny, theft of property and solicitation to murder, a Division of Correction spokesman said. D'Ascenzo is familiar with the Maryland prison system, having served time in the Jessup area and in all three Hagerstown prisons.

FREDERICK, Md. - A pedestrian was killed Thursday evening in Frederick after being struck by a vehicle, Frederick County Sheriff's deputies said. The man was near the intersection of Corporate Drive and New Design Road about 5:30 p.m. when he was struck, Cpl. Jennifer Bailey said. She said the man was an adult and was taken by ambulance to Frederick Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The man's identity was not available late Thursday. Bailey said he did not live in Maryland, and deputies were working to notify his family.

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- A man who held an accident victim's hand as he died in November 2006 on a stretch of Alternate U.S. 40 between Funkstown and Boonsboro known as "Dead Man's Curve" or "Death Curve" said he wants more signs posted in the area and he thinks the road should be straightened. "We get tired of hearing the crashes late at night," Geary Hoover said. A State Highway Administration official who reviews every fatal crash in the area to determine whether the road was a contributing factor said he believes the current signage is appropriate.

I have been waiting for "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" since I saw "Dead Man's Chest" last year. So my friends and I lined up with other hardcore "Pirates" fans to see the first showing of "At World's End. " And for about 168 minutes, five teenage girls were completely silent. Well, maybe not completely. In the movie, there are more than several stories going on at once. As they entwine and weave a masterpiece of fantastic cinematography, the once-confusing plot is made clear.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - An Ohio man was killed Sunday night when he and a woman were hit by a pickup truck as they tried to walk across U.S. 11 near Martinsburg. The accident happened about 10:20 p.m. after the pair left Alibi's near W.Va. 9 and attempted to cross the street toward Peggy and Carol's Bar, according to West Virginia State Police. A southbound 1990 Ford Ranger struck the pair, fatally injuring the 62-year-old Ohio man and seriously injuring a Martinsburg woman, police said.
