24/7 Dance Studio in Hagerstown will hold auditions for its Dance Fusion Student Performing Company on Saturday, Aug. 11, at South Pointe Center in Hagerstown. Placement for the company is by audition only. The elementary school-age audition will be from 1 to 2 p.m., middle school-age from 2 to 3 p.m., and high school-age from 3 to 4 p.m. Dancers are asked to wear a solid-color leotard, tights, and bring ballet and jazz shoes for the auditions. They will do a ballet and jazz combination, and will be tested for flexibility and leaps.

SMITHSBURG ? Within about 30 minutes on Saturday, girls at Lezlee L. Sabo's dance studio had learned a new routine to the tune of Jack falling down a hill and Jill tumbling down after. The girls chanted along to the nursery rhyme lyrics as they moved this way and that in front of a mirrored wall, then applauded their own efforts. The occasion was a fundraiser for one of the studio's dancers. Sabo, the director of My Dance Studio near Smithsburg, said Katie McCracken was diagnosed with leukemia just before a recital last year.

A barrage of more than 20 letters from parents and residents influenced a Jefferson County Commission's decision Thursday to vote against closing three unused paper roads and an alley in Shepherdstown, W.Va. Commissioners Dale Manuel, Frances Morgan and Lyn Widmyer voted against closing the roadways. Manuel said his vote against the closing was “for the safety of children,” while Morgan said the proposed closings created a conflict between a property owner's rights and public safety.
