Jim Powers ballroom dance party will be Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Maugansville Ruritan Club building.  Admission costs $4 per person. Chime players On Sunday during the 10 a.m. worship service at Covenant Presbyterian Church, the church's chime choir will play Christmas carols.  Three octaves of the Malmark Chimes were purchased with memorial gifts in 1994 from Plumsteadville, Pa. The shape and precise tuning of the choirchime provides a beautiful tone.  The chime choir is under the direction of Barbara Biser of Hagerstown.  The community is invited.

Bailey Jo Stitely celebrated her ninth birthday Feb. 3. All she wanted for her birthday was to have a dance party. Bailey Jo invited 15 of her friends over for the dance party. In lieu of gifts, Bailey Jo asked her friends to bring items to be sent overseas to the troops. The girls donated movies, CDs, phone cards, beef jerky, batteries, candy and other items to numerous to list. In addition, the girls decorated the front of blank notecards for the troops to use to write home.

Home-school art show Nearly 200 pieces of art by home-school students from the Tri-State area will be on display from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at Zion United Church of Christ, 201 N. Permit sought for Dec. 22 party John Hovanec appeared before the Board of License Commissioners for Washington County on Wednesday requesting a permit for a Dec. 22 dance party at the Grand Venice Inn benefiting Toys for Tots. The estimated attendance for the party is 125 people. It would be held from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. It was not clear Wednesday afternoon whether a decision regarding the permit was made. Instructions sought for license transfer Owners of a now-closed business appeared before the Board of License Commissioners for Washington County on Wednesday for instructions regarding how to apply to transfer a liquor license.

Randi Leydig knows how to throw a party. For her, the fun is in the planning and the idea of getting her friends together. For the second year in a row, Randi passed on gifts for herself, asking guests to donate to a good cause. Last year, $435 was raised for Old Forge Elementary School's PTA, where Randi is a fifth-grader. This year, $1,092 was split between the families of two Old Forge students for medical bills. One of the students was in a car accident with her mother and two sisters; the other was a fellow fifth-grader who had third-degree burns on his legs.

The Chewsville Lions Club is selling Sheetz fundraiser coupon books for $10 each. The books include more than $25 worth of food and drink coupons and are good for three years.  To buy a coupon book, call Warren Middlekauff at 301-739-3298. The club also is selling raffle tickets for a Centurion (by Generac) 3250-watt portable generator. Raffle tickets cost $5 each. The winner will be drawn Dec. 8 and you do not need to be present to win.  For raffle tickets, call Middlekauff at 301-739-3298.  In addition, the Chewsville Lions Club will have a food stand at the Sycamore Heights Farmhouse craft show on Saturday and Sunday.

Dance party A Jim Powers ballroom dance party will be Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Maugansville Ruritan building on Maugans Avenue in Maugansville. Admission is $4. Pen Mar Park The Headliners will be the featured band Sunday at Pen Mar Park from 2 to 5 p.m. Over the years it has become the most requested band at the park. This variety band performs throughout the area for various dance clubs and organizations, always to record crowds. Spanish class A free Spanish class for students entering grades 3 to 6 will be offered at the Smithsburg Library from June 23 to 27 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required.
