The Women's Club is taking registration for the 2010-2011 junior dance classes for sixth-, seventh, eighth- and ninth-grade students. Students will be taught many of the latest swing dances and also the waltz, polka and Latin dances by instructor Mary Crowell Smith. On Saturday, at 6:30 p.m., the parishioners of St. Joseph Catholic Church at 17630 Virginia Ave. are sponsoring a country-themed dance to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity's Apostle Build housing project. The featured entertainment will be the Hagerstown band The Compadres. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the meal will be served from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Music and dancing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. The community is invited. Proceeds will go to the Habitat for Humanity projects in the area.

Shepherdstown School of Dance expanded and relocated from its original site in the Hoxton Financial building to a larger space at 400 S. Princess St., the former True Value Hardware Store, in Shepherdstown. The relocation gives the school a more convenient location, bigger studio space - including two full dressing rooms and an enhanced waiting area - and an opportunity to expand their curriculum. The 2011-12 school term began Sept. 6 at the new building. Shepherdstown School of Dance has expanded its adult course offerings to include adult beginner ballet and Rommett Floor-Barre, in addition to the current tap class.

MYERSVILLE, Md. - A teen spring mixer and dance will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Musket Ridge Golf Club, 3555 Brethren Church Road. The mixer is open to ages 13 and older. Parents are also welcome. Cost is $25 per person, which includes dinner. Teen buffet includes mini pizzas, chicken tenders and more. Adult meal includes chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, brownies, cookies, coffee and iced tea. Hannah Violet of Ambasador Girl Scout Troop 40652 from the Pleasant Valley area recently completed the requirements to receive her Gold Award. The Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. For her Gold Award Project, Hannah spent more than 85 hours of planning and coordinating a dance for the Life Skills students (special needs), along with the Unified Sports Athletes from all of the Washington County Public Schools. The dance, held May 24, was attended by more than 60 students, parents, grandparents and teachers. Next Dimensions restaurant in Funkstown donated its facility for the evening. An “Under the Sea” theme welcomed students, who danced the night away to music donated by the DJ services of Amplified Entertainment. Each student in attendance took home a decorated bottle filled with sand and seashells.

Kalilah Perkins' attitude when she sauntered onstage coolly dragging her feet and looking sideways conveyed a nonchalant, “So what?” Her cheeky dance performance to a hip-hop mix answered clearly. “That's what.” It also won the 13-year-old Hagerstown girl top honors in the Washington County Free Library's Just Dance contest Saturday evening at Valley Mall. Perkins competed against four other finalists for the prize. After locking and popping to the likes of Nicki Minaj, Usher and Kelly Rowland, the freshman dance student at Barbara Ingram School for the Arts said she felt “pretty good” about her performance.

Visiting dance artist Katherine Ferrier will teach a dance improvisation master class from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at the War Memorial Building, 102 E. German St., Shepherdstown. The class, "Embodied Democracy," encourages participants to build community through the practice of paying attention, culminating in the ability to make conscious choices in relationship to others, the environment and sound.
