The Women's Club is taking registration for the 2010-2011 junior dance classes for sixth-, seventh, eighth- and ninth-grade students. Students will be taught many of the latest swing dances and also the waltz, polka and Latin dances by instructor Mary Crowell Smith. The first class is at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, at The Women's Club, 31 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown. For further information or to register, call 301-739-0870 Monday thru Friday from 9 to 1.

On Saturday, at 6:30 p.m., the parishioners of St. Joseph Catholic Church at 17630 Virginia Ave. are sponsoring a country-themed dance to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity's Apostle Build housing project. The featured entertainment will be the Hagerstown band The Compadres. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the meal will be served from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Music and dancing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. The community is invited. Proceeds will go to the Habitat for Humanity projects in the area.

Shepherdstown School of Dance expanded and relocated from its original site in the Hoxton Financial building to a larger space at 400 S. Princess St., the former True Value Hardware Store, in Shepherdstown. The relocation gives the school a more convenient location, bigger studio space - including two full dressing rooms and an enhanced waiting area - and an opportunity to expand their curriculum. The 2011-12 school term began Sept. 6 at the new building. Shepherdstown School of Dance has expanded its adult course offerings to include adult beginner ballet and Rommett Floor-Barre, in addition to the current tap class.

MYERSVILLE, Md. - A teen spring mixer and dance will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Musket Ridge Golf Club, 3555 Brethren Church Road. The mixer is open to ages 13 and older. Parents are also welcome. Cost is $25 per person, which includes dinner. Teen buffet includes mini pizzas, chicken tenders and more. Adult meal includes chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, brownies, cookies, coffee and iced tea. Hannah Violet of Ambasador Girl Scout Troop 40652 from the Pleasant Valley area recently completed the requirements to receive her Gold Award.  The Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. For her Gold Award Project, Hannah spent more than 85 hours of planning and coordinating a dance for the Life Skills students (special needs), along with the Unified Sports Athletes from all of the Washington County Public Schools.   The dance, held May 24, was attended by more than 60 students, parents, grandparents and teachers.  Next Dimensions restaurant in Funkstown donated its facility for the evening.   An “Under the Sea” theme welcomed students, who danced the night away to music donated by the DJ services of Amplified Entertainment.  Each student in attendance took home a decorated bottle filled with sand and seashells.

 Visiting dance artist Katherine Ferrier will teach a dance improvisation master class from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 16,  at the War Memorial Building, 102 E. German St., Shepherdstown. The class, "Embodied Democracy," encourages participants to build community through the practice of paying attention, culminating in the ability to make conscious choices in relationship to others, the environment and sound. The cost is $10. Kalilah Perkins' attitude when she sauntered onstage coolly dragging her feet and looking sideways conveyed a nonchalant, “So what?” Her cheeky dance performance to a hip-hop mix answered clearly. “That's what.” It also won the 13-year-old Hagerstown girl top honors in the Washington County Free Library's Just Dance contest Saturday evening at Valley Mall. Perkins competed against four other finalists for the prize. After locking and popping to the likes of Nicki Minaj, Usher and Kelly Rowland, the freshman dance student at Barbara Ingram School for the Arts said she felt “pretty good” about her performance.

A '50s & '60s dance will be part of the final weekend of WaynesboroFest on Saturday, July 7, at American Legion Post 15, 63 E. Main St., Waynesboro.  Doors will open at 6 p.m. with dancing from 7 to 11 p.m. There will be a cash bar and light snacks will be available for purchase. Larry Leonard of LL DeeJay will provide the music. Additional parking is available in the Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home lot between Walnut Street & South Broad Street. Tickets cost $7 in advance or $10 at the door.

The Hagerstown Country Western Dance Association will hold a line dance Saturday, May 25, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Maugansville Ruritan Club, 18007 Maugans Ave. The line dance is for singles and couples. Latin dance classes will be offered Tuesdays and Wednesday at 6 p.m. starting May 7 and 8 at Memorial Recreation Center, 109 North St. in Hagerstown. The classes are sponsored by Comunidad Latina de Washington County and will consist of five Latin dances from Bolivia, Puerto Rico, Salvadore, Mexico and Colombia. The classes are geared for those in elementary and middle school. There is a $25 costume fee. Adults are welcome to participate. Children and adults will participate at local- and state-level events, including festivals, parades, etc., as opportunities arise.

The Hagerstown Country Western Dance Association will hold its Mother's Day  dance Saturday, May 11, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Maugansville Ruritan Club, now that renovations at the club are complete. “Could it be? Yes, it could. Something's coming, something good, If I can wait!” The wait will not be long. “Something” is coming this weekend. The words are Stephen Sondheim's in “Something's Coming,” Tony's anticipatory song in “West Side Story.” Those lyrics also anticipate “Orchestral Dances,” the final masterworks concert of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra's 31st season. “The whole orchestra is in the spotlight for this concert,” wrote Music Director Elizabeth Schulze in an email.

Hagerstown Community College will hold a spring dance concert Saturday, April 27, beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Kepler Center on the college campus. The event will feature students in the HCC Dance Company, as well as several students taking dance classes at HCC. A combination of contemporary, jazz, modern and ballet dancing will be performed. It was a campground square dance that prompted Art LaVigne's parents and older sister to take up square dancing. Art was called into action because his sister needed a partner, even though the 12-year-old had no interest at the time. “My parents volunteered me. They dragged me kicking and screaming,” LaVigne said. That attitude changed quickly. LaVigne, 49, who lives in Hagerstown and works full time as an IT support specialist in Rockville, Md., has been caller for the Gad-Abouts Square Dance Club of Hagerstown since 1997, one of the largest square dance clubs in the four-state area.

Students in the Veterans Club and the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Hagerstown Community College are sponsoring a 1950s-style sock hop and dance Saturday, April 13, from 6 to 11 p.m., in the ARCC. The event will feature free dance lessons from 6:30 to 7 p.m. and performances by swing bands Rick K and the Allnighters and the Holders. Attendees are encouraged to dress in 1950s attire. Light refreshments will be served. Tickets cost $25 per person. Tickets can be purchased in advance by emailing veteransclub@hagerstowncc.edu.

The One Mountain Foundation will host an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner, auction and dance Saturday, March 23, at American Legion Post 239 on McAfee Hill Road in Cascade.  The menu includes spaghetti, tomato or meat sauce, meat balls, Italian bread and a variety of rolls, salad with choice of dressings, dessert, and drink (coffee, tea, or water). Dinner will start at 5 p.m., the auction is at 7 p.m. and dancing will be from 8 to 11 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for those ages 5 to 12. Those younger than 5 will be admitted free.

1. Readying for springtime Flower and Garden Show will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 16, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 17. Hagerstown Community College's Athletic, Recreation and Community Center, off Robinwood Drive, east of Hagerstown. Show participants include experts in nurseries, lawn and garden equipment, pottery and statuary, landscaping, tree services, stone products, pools, spas, outdoor furniture, florists, wild bird products and natural gourmet gifts from the garden.

The Hagerstown Country Western Dance Association will extend dance lessons for an additional four weeks. Lessons will be from April 2 to 23 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on the corner of Virginia Avenue and Halfway Boulevard. The classes cost $5.
