The Women's Club is taking registration for the 2010-2011 junior dance classes for sixth-, seventh, eighth- and ninth-grade students. Students will be taught many of the latest swing dances and also the waltz, polka and Latin dances by instructor Mary Crowell Smith. MYERSVILLE, Md. - A teen spring mixer and dance will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Musket Ridge Golf Club, 3555 Brethren Church Road. The mixer is open to ages 13 and older. Parents are also welcome. Cost is $25 per person, which includes dinner. Teen buffet includes mini pizzas, chicken tenders and more. Adult meal includes chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, brownies, cookies, coffee and iced tea. On Saturday, at 6:30 p.m., the parishioners of St. Joseph Catholic Church at 17630 Virginia Ave. are sponsoring a country-themed dance to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity's Apostle Build housing project. The featured entertainment will be the Hagerstown band The Compadres. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the meal will be served from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Music and dancing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. The community is invited. Proceeds will go to the Habitat for Humanity projects in the area.

Shepherdstown School of Dance expanded and relocated from its original site in the Hoxton Financial building to a larger space at 400 S. Princess St., the former True Value Hardware Store, in Shepherdstown. The relocation gives the school a more convenient location, bigger studio space - including two full dressing rooms and an enhanced waiting area - and an opportunity to expand their curriculum. The 2011-12 school term began Sept. 6 at the new building. Shepherdstown School of Dance has expanded its adult course offerings to include adult beginner ballet and Rommett Floor-Barre, in addition to the current tap class.

Hannah Violet of Ambasador Girl Scout Troop 40652 from the Pleasant Valley area recently completed the requirements to receive her Gold Award.  The Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. For her Gold Award Project, Hannah spent more than 85 hours of planning and coordinating a dance for the Life Skills students (special needs), along with the Unified Sports Athletes from all of the Washington County Public Schools.   The dance, held May 24, was attended by more than 60 students, parents, grandparents and teachers.  Next Dimensions restaurant in Funkstown donated its facility for the evening.   An “Under the Sea” theme welcomed students, who danced the night away to music donated by the DJ services of Amplified Entertainment.  Each student in attendance took home a decorated bottle filled with sand and seashells.

Americans know different European countries specialize in different foods - pasta from Italy, sausages from Germany, sauces from France, fish and chips from Great Britain. The same is true of countries in Central America and South America, said Hagers-town resident Liliana Robeson. “We all have all different kinds of empanadas (filled, folded, fried dough). Also, different kind of tortillas, such as arepas (flatbreads) - these are more South American, like Venezuela and Colombia,” Robeson said.

If the Smithsburg football team wanted to, it could be a hit on American Bandstand. “We are dancing around and having fun,” said coach Buddy Orndorff. According to Orndorff, the Leopards have a good beat and harmony among the ranks. They have been easy to dance with. Does that mean they will be given a 8-2 record this season? “I don't know,” Orndorff said. “It's going to be one of those years where I don't know how we are going to be until we get out there and play.

A cool breeze came up from the deep valley below and the view of Waynesboro, Pa., from atop the mountain at Pen Mar Park was as breathtaking as ever. Darwin Barkdoll of Chambersburg, Pa., stood at the edge of the park's scenic overlook and was picking out parts of his hometown in the distance with a big pair of binoculars. “This is a place I cherish,” said Barkdoll, who used to come to the park as a child to ride on a roller coaster and other attractions. Barkdoll came to the park later in his life when his employer - Landis Tool Co. - used to host Fourth of July celebrations at the park.

Mike McQuillan and Estarlin Martinez each had two hits, and Nick Lee and Ian Dickson pitched out of trouble as the Hagerstown Suns defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers 5-1 on Saturday night in front of 1,333 fans at Municipal Stadium. The Suns (77-52, 39-23) were a half-game ahead of West Virginia in the race for the South Atlantic League Northern Division's second-half title. The Power won the first game of a doubleheader with Savannah 6-3 in nine innings. The second game was in progress.

Music lovers gathered to enjoy some live music at the inaugural River Rat Street Dance/Concert in Williamsport on Friday evening. The concert, held near the intersection of North Conococheague and Salisbury streets, was a precursor to the C&O Canal Days event this weekend in Williamsport. Joan Knode, the town's assistant mayor, said the concert was being held to build excitement around the weekend. The “River Rat” used to be the mascot for Springfield Middle School in Williamsport, and local sports teams also used to call themselves the River Rats, according to Knode.

Ballet and All That Jazz dancers recently completed another successful dance season. Nine high school seniors performed together for the last time in the dance school's spring recital May 18 at The Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown. The dancers are Kristen Davis, Emily Fortney, Maggie Manspeaker, Moriah Garling, Ellen McQuaid, Akelah Taylor, Laura Meckley, Caroline Bradford and Emily Newmann. In June, dancers joined instructor Bonnie Slawson, learning contemporary, jazz and hip-hop dances at jazz camp.

Scores of area residents flocked to the University Plaza in downtown Hagerstown on Thursday night to enjoy an evening of jazz and dance. “A Night of Jazz” was presented by the Friends of the Doleman Black Heritage Museum, the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the city. The concert featured Hagerstown's OTB Jazz Band and another group called ReFreshed Band from Princess Anne, Md. Phillip Doc Martin, a saxophonist, was also scheduled to play.
