"It can be good and useful, and then there are the frivolous uses.

By GUY FLETCHER Staff Writer The Bible told Carroll Herbert that people should do all they can to help the needy of the world. Herbert, an inmate at the Roxbury Correctional Institution south of Hagerstown, saw no reason why he should wait to be released from prison before he does his part. That's why he and many other of the prison's 1,911 inmates spent the past nine months collecting coupons off Little Debbie snack food boxes. The inmates collected 13,632 coupons, which were redeemed to purchase a copier and athletic equipment for a Catholic grade school in East Baltimore.

I must have some fascination with Las Vegas. Perhaps it's more about cards and card dealers. I believe that as I lay back gently on the big psychological sofa of life, I think I have actually found the true meaning of it all. Bonus cards. Bonus cards make the world go around. Bonus cards take you to new places you've never been before. Often bonus cards take you back to places you really did not want to visit in the first place, but the bonus card has this mystical power.

Less than two years ago, I would not pay more than 99 cents for a 64-ounce bottle of apple juice. I could have paid more if I'd picked up any brand any place, but with a flip through flyers or a trip to a discount store, I could find a price I liked. Now the grocery shopping game has changed. If I wait to find apple juice for 99 cents, I might never drink it again. Grocery prices have risen throughout the past year. The best price I've seen in months for a bottle of apple juice was $1.49.

Just when you thought you had heard it all, another athlete opens his mouth. ... Latrell Sprewell of the Minnesota Timberwolves (did you know I'd be talking about an NBA player?) is apparently offended by a contract offer he received from the team that would reportedly pay him $9 million per year. By now, we're not surprised when an overpaid professional athlete complains about how hard it is to be him. So, the idea that Sprewell is insulted by such a paltry offer is not necessarily noteworthy here.
