Living by the “practice makes perfect” theory, the Williamsport Wildcats spent extra time working shooting since their last game on Feb. 17. It was a game where the Wildcats scored only 35 points, including senior Alex Aleshire's noticeable “0” in the scorebook. That wasn't happening on Friday night in the first round of the Maryland Class 2A West Region as Aleshire and his teammates scorched Catoctin 73-47. Aleshire came out full throttle and coach Scott Mowbray couldn't have been happier with the execution of the offense.

Coming off a lackluster 56-37 loss at North Hagerstown on Tuesday night, Smithsburg's girls basketball team came out with a much higher intensity level Friday night on the Leopards' home court against Catoctin. Smithsburg gave this season's MVAL Antietam champions all they could handle for most of the contest. But the Cougars executed better for an eight-minute stretch of the second half, putting together a 19-5 run that broke a 38-38 tie. A last-ditch Leopards rally fell short in a 65-53 loss that was nonetheless promising with the Maryland Class 1A West playoffs two weeks away.

The Catoctin girls basketball team scored the last six points of the game to knock off host South Hagerstown 61-56 Friday night for sole possession of first place in the MVAL Antietam. It appeared the Rebels had a chance to get a victory when Chelsey Scott scored on a layup with 1:59 remaining to give them a 56-55 lead. But the Cougars took over from there. Caroline Grossweiler scored a basket with 1:48 left to put Catoctin on top for good at 57-56. Kristy Erfurdt made a crucial steal and then turned it into a layup with 1:01 left in the game to extend the Cougars' lead to 59-56.

Girls Basketball South Hagerstown's squad should send a thank-you card to Boonsboro. Were it not for the Warriors, the Rebels would not have the opportunity to wrestle the MVAL Antietam lead from Catoctin. Without question, when South (12-6, 9-2) hosts Catoctin (11-6, 9-2) Friday night at 7, it will be the most significant Antietam contest of the season. The winner will take the league lead by a full game with two games to play. “We're preparing the same way we prepare for every game,” Rebels coach Nate Naylor said Thursday.

North Hagerstown wrestling coach Greg Slick had Catoctin sized up pretty well before their MVAL Antietam Conference showdown Thursday night. “When I looked at it on paper, I thought they were going to score 30 points,” he said. “I was only hoping we'd score 31.” The Hubs did that and more. They beat the host Cougars 42-30 to take home the Antietam title, completing a perfect run through the conference. It was the first Antietam loss for Catoctin (17-4, 3-1), which began the night as the No. 14 dual-meet team in the Maryland State Wrestling Association's top-20 state poll.

When things went from a sparring match to a full-fledged fight, the North Hagerstown boys basketball team put up its guard. Or in this case, it was its guards. J.R. Railing and Isiaha Keyes guided the Hubs through the dicey parts of a tense fourth quarter on Friday as the Hubs counter-punched their way to a 69-65 MVAL Antietam victory over Catoctin. Railing scored 23 points and Keyes added 16, and the duo combined for 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Hubs outpointed the Cougars in a close game that should have never been.

Catoctin girls basketball coach Amy Entwistle came into Friday's MVAL Antietam game at North Hagerstown with two messages for her team. “I told them two things: 'Don't sweat the small stuff and do the little things,'” Entwistle said. Those “little things” added up to a big 51-42 win for the Cougars, who are sitting atop the MVAL Antietam with a 9-1 conference record (11-5 overall). Both teams got off to a slow start in the first quarter, shooting a combined 6-for-31.
