In another time and another place, Dennis Corapi would have saddle sores. For 27 years, he has participated in what cowboys would call “team roping.” Out west, that's a competition. Here in Hagerstown, it's considered Little League baseball. Corapi is the manager of Federal's 11-12 All-Stars. He's been in the position before, but this time, it's different. “This is my last rodeo,” Corapi said on Thursday. After 27 years of working with young and upcoming baseball talent at Federal, Corapi will be walking into the sunset after this “rodeo.” If this were the movies, it's Corapi's “High Noon.” For now, he stands five minutes before the clock strikes 12. He is there to help a new batch of players learn the game he loves while achieving some success to feel good about.

If anything, the Hagerstown Suns are trying to make things interesting in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division. After matching wins and losses with Greensboro and trailing the Grasshoppers by 6 1/2 games for the better part of the last month, the Suns are firmly in the division leader's rear-view mirror as they head to the first-half finish line. Alex Meyer controlled Kannapolis for six innings and the Suns used home runs by Jason Martinson and Cole Leonida to build an early lead before settling for a 6-5 victory on Thursday before 1,215 fans at Municipal Stadium.

Growing up in Greencastle, Pa., Jason Kabler was all rock 'n' roll. He said he loved to sing in the style of Axl Rose, former lead singer of Guns 'N Roses. But then something happened - his voice changed and he couldn't hit the notes just right anymore. His mother, who taught her son how to play guitar, introduced him to the music of a new artist. "She's like, 'he's not rock, but he's as close as you're gonna get in country.' And at that time, I was like, 'Country, mom, come on,'" Kabler recalled during a telephone interview from Nashville, Tenn., his home for more than a decade.

The Hagerstown City Council unanimously approved a motion Tuesday evening to contribute up to $400,000 annually over a 20-year period to support the development and construction of a proposed downtown multiuse sports and events center. City funding would match an indirect contribution of $400,000 by the Washington County Board of Commissioners, which agreed to take over the city's yearly $400,000 payment to the 911 emergency communications center. It allows the city to contribute up to $800,000 toward the local share of debt service on the facility that is estimated will cost about $30 million and include an adjacent parking deck.

Martinsburg officials hope to complete as many as 18 street-resurfacing projects this spring and create three handicapped parking spaces at two parks as part of the city's paving program. Depending on the outcome of the bidding process, the work could be awarded May 10 by the Martinsburg City Council. City Manager Mark Baldwin said recently that he hopes the improvements can be completed by June 30, the end of the fiscal year. Two parking spaces for the handicapped are being eyed for P.O.
