One on One Singles, a dance for those ages 21 and older, will be held the first and third Fridays of every month at the Knights of Columbus, 20340 Leitersburg Pike in Hagerstown. Music is by Slate's DJ. The dress is casual and there will be a cash bar. Snacks and door prizes will be available. The dances are from 8 p.m. to midnight. Tickets cost $7 each. Pangborn Council 1365 of The Knights of Columbus in Hagerstown donated the proceeds from its annual St. Patrick's Day celebration to Hospice of Washington County. The celebration was March 15 and the proceeds were donated to Hospice. A check for $1,500 was presented to Hospice's Community Relation Liaison Patricia Smith by Jim Salembene of The Knights of Columbus at the Hospice offices on April 18. This is the third consecutive year that the Knights of Columbus has made the donation.

Pangborn Council 1365 of the Knights of Columbus in Hagerstown donated part of its proceeds from its annual St. Patrick's Day celebration to Hospice of Washington County. The celebration was held March 14. A check was presented April 1 to Susan G. Taylor, Hospice executive director, by David Flynn at Hospice.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- The 46th annual Chicken 'n Stuff fundraiser was held Monday at Chambersburg Area Middle School. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Chambersburg, Knights of Columbus and George Washington Masonic Lodge No. 143, the event benefits the Franklin County Therapeutic Riding Center.

Baby sitter training to be offered The Washington County American Red Cross will offer a training course for baby sitters. Course participants learn to administer basic first aid; properly hold, diaper and feed a child; take emergency action when needed; monitor safe play and learn infant and child CPR. The one-day training is open to girls and boys 11 to 15 years old and is taught by an authorized Red Cross instructor. The class costs $55. Grants are available for participants who qualify for assistance.

Catholic schools provide a Christ-centered education that is academically excellent and empowers students to reach their full potential spiritually, intellectually, physically, socially and morally. In recognition of the importance of a local Catholic education, the Knights of Columbus Pangborn Council 1365 in Hagerstown recently matched the $1,000 donations made by Knights of Columbus members Robert Rankin and the Rev. George Limmer. The Pangborn Council donated $2,000, for a total of $4,000, toward tuition assistance to support St. Mary Catholic School students.  The presentation included John Danko, deputy grand knight; Grand Knight Cel Shannon; Limmer; St. Mary Catholic School Principal Patricia McDermott; and Rankin.

Barbara Ann Wood, 82, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at Berkeley Medical Center. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home. The service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastors Arnold Brown and Ralph Campbell officiating. A graveside service will be Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Park Hill Cemetery in Columbus, Ga.

Ida G. (Shank) Frey, 91, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2013, at her residence, The Forum at Knightsbridge in Columbus. Born July 7, 1921, in Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Aaron and Ida (Grove) Shank. Ida was the wife of the late J. Melvin Frey, who passed away in June 1984; and also the wife of the late Irvin M. Frey, who passed away in March 2008. She enjoyed quilting and crocheting. One of her fondest memories was of being a member of the Menno Haven Ladies Auxiliary while she was living in Chambersburg, Pa. Ida was of the Mennonite faith.

On Monday, Federal Employees will be off work and other U.S. citizens will have the day free as well, all because of an accident. “When I was in school, Columbus Day was a day off,” Hagerstown resident Emily Ricketts, 23, said. “Schools should give a little more history on the holiday. It established the country, even though he landed in the Bahamas.” Columbus Day, which is Monday, does indeed commemorate when Christopher Columbus landed in the New World, at San Salvador Island in the Bahamas.

  The Knights of Columbus Pangborn Council 1365 of Hagerstown raised $700 during its St. Patrick's Day charity fundraiser March 17. Members John Navarro, grand knight, and Cel Shannon, deputy grand Knight, presented the check to Cheryl Brown, development director at Hospice of Washington County, on Sept. 21. The Knights of Columbus chose to have its donation directed to the Benevolence Fund at Hospice. The fund provides basic emergency funding for patients and their families while needed community services are established.
