The boys basketball coaching fraternity in Washington County is back to full strength. Following Ryan Grabill's departure to Williamsport, Clear Spring had a void to fill and all it had to do was dip into the assistant ranks. Athletic director Lisa Shives recently announced the hiring of John Hutzell, 34, as the Blazers' new boys basketball coach. A graduate of Allegany High School and Frostburg State University, Hutzell spent the last three years as an assistant to Grabill and also had been a JV girls assistant.

James Calvin Myers Sr., 71, of Clear Spring, Md., passed away Monday, July 22, 2013, at his home. He was born July 16, 1942, in Clear Spring to the late Andrew Jackson and Dorah May Henson Myers. He was employed by Myers Building Systems, Clear Spring, until his retirement. He was a beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather. Survivors include wife, Margaret L. Robinson Myers, married for 40 years, of Clear Spring; daughters, Loretta L. Bond, Barbara A. Green, Melissa A. Myers, Nellie I. Williams, D. Kay Doyle and Shawn D. Hess; sons, James C. Myers Jr., Jimmy C. Myers II and Calvin W. Higgins Jr.; four sisters; six brothers; 30 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Six years ago, several Clear Spring residents decided to start a community garden that would provide support to those hit hard by a struggling economy. “There were a lot of 'for sale' signs in the neighborhood and several families where (people) had been laid off,” said Jametta McDaniel, one of the original garden founders. “We knew we had to do something.” During its first five years, the Clear Spring Community Garden was located on St. Paul Road at the property of one of the garden's founding members.

Wednesday, July 31, 2013 YOUTH BASEBALL PONY-14 East Zone Tournament HIGH POINT, N.C. - Bryce Ruppenthal allowed just two hits while striking out 11 in six innings, and Hagerstown struck for five runs in the second inning and beat Reidsville, N.C., 7-1 on Wednesday. Hagerstown advanced to the winners' bracket final and will face an opponent to be determined on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The winner of the East Zone Tournament will advance to the PONY World Series. Ruppenthal allowed two hits and a walk to load the bases in the first inning, but got out of the jam with a strikeout, then settled in and was untouchable.

Zella Pearl (Heasty) Weaver, 87, of Hagerstown, Md., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 25, 2013, at Williamsport Nursing Home. Born July 27, 1925, in Lake Township, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Robert Francis and Vivian Pearl (Bostwick) Heasty. Zella was a 1943 graduate of Elkton High School in Elkton, Mich. She graduated in 1946 from Hurley Hospital School of Nursing in Flint, Mich. She worked as a charge nurse at Washington County Hospital for 15 years before going to Ravenwood Lutheran Village in 1980.

Gerald Reichard "Jerry" Taylor Jr., 56, of Clear Spring, Md., died Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at the Philadelphia Cancer Treatment Center in Philadelphia, Pa. Born Dec. 28, 1956, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Gerald R. Taylor Sr. and Francis Huyett Taylor. He was employed by Callas Contractors as a superintendent He was a member of Izaak Walton League of America, Maryland Division. He loved riding his Harley, shooting his guns at Izaak Walton, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
