Not all alleys are created equal. In urban areas, many are narrow passageways merely allowing for deliveries behind businesses. But in small towns, they're often quiet paths leading to an unexpected oasis. Such is the case in Clear Spring, where, nestled not far from traffic on Cumberland Street, residents have created exotic green spaces filled this time of the year with the sweet scents of spring. Crocus and daffodils have sprouted from rich earth that has softened after a long, hard winter.

Lucie Anderson, 89, of 12513 Garrow Drive, Clear Spring, Md., died on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Julia Manor Nursing Home. Born Dec. 10, 1923, in Mount Vernon, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late John and Christina Gaccione Bruno. She was retired from McDonald Douglas in 1987. Lucie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She was a member of the Legion of Mary. She is survived by one daughter, Jackie May and husband, Larry, of Clear Spring; one son, Douglas Anderson and wife, Lucy, of Long Beach, Calif.; one brother, George Bruno of Millbrook, N.Y.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 PREP BASEBALL CLEAR SPRING - Storms put a damper on Clear Spring's hot start, as Wednesday's MVAL Antietam baseball game was suspended with the Blazers leading 4-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Williamsport drew first blood in the first, as Brandon Toloso singled and scored on a wild pitch. Clear Spring responded with four runs in the second. Jared Brant doubled and scored on another double by Dylan Appel, who scored on a wild pitch.

About 1,570 Potomac Edison customers in Washington County lost their power for about an hour Tuesday afternoon when a circuit malfunctioned at a substation in West Virginia, a spokesman for Potomac Edison said. David Kline said the outage was reported at 12:57 p.m. A check of the utility's website showed power was restored to all customers in the affected area, which included some in the Hagerstown, Clear Spring and Williamsport areas. - Dan Dearth

Alan Eugene Kipe, 81, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Monday, April 22, 2013, at his home, with his three daughters at his side. He has joined his beloved wife of almost 44 years, Mary Horst Kipe, who passed away Oct. 4, 1995. Born May 6, 1931, Alan was the youngest son of the late Omar and Catherine Kipe of Waynesboro, Pa.
