Twenty students in Washington County Public Schools have been named to the All-State ensembles for vocal and instrumental, and two other students have been named alternates, according to a school system press release. Two students won All-Eastern Regional honors for vocals, and another student received All-Eastern Regional honors for instrumental, according to the release. Washington County will be represented by student musicians at various All State 2007 performances. Most of the performances will be held the weekend of Feb. 24-25 at the Murphy Fine Arts Center at Morgan State University in Baltimore. This year, two students were chosen for the All Eastern Ensemble - Emily Myers of Clear Spring High School and Adam Taylor of Boonsboro. Adam Stephens of Boonsboro is an alternate. The following high school students auditioned and were selected for the All State ensembles listed.

Two recent Washington County high school graduates were awarded $500 scholarships by Medairy Temple. Kelsi Jo Phillips of Williamsport High School will be attending Marshall University in the fall, majoring in elementary education. Allen E. Mackey of Clear Spring High School will be attending Frostburg State University in the fall, majoring in wildlife and fisheries resources.

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Three Washington County students were honored recently at the McDonald's Educates Scholarship reception. Amy Poet, a Clear Spring High School senior; Matthew Almendarez, a senior at South Hagerstown High School; and Kelechi Urama, a senior at Boonsboro High School; will receive a $1,500 scholarship toward college tuition.

Seven Washington County high school students auditioned and were selected for the All State Band, Orchestra and Chorus program. They performed with other students from Maryland at the Baltimore Convention Center from Feb. 27 to March 1. The Maryland Music Educators Association, in cooperation with principals and superintendents of Maryland schools, sponsors the All State Band, Orchestra and Chorus program. The Washington County Character Counts! Coalition has recognized four Washington County Public Schools students for demonstrating positive character traits in school and in the community. The students are Catherine Hess and Tessa Walls, Hancock Middle/Senior High School; Joe D. Repp, Clear Spring High School; and Brittany Maggitti, South Hagerstown High School. Each will receive a $500 scholarship.

Board modifies house deed The Washington County Board of Education agreed Tuesday to modify the deed of a historic farmhouse in Clear Spring so it can be renovated. The deed had to be modified because part of the easement of the Plumb Grove house is on the property of Clear Spring High School, said school board member Andrew Humphreys. The Washington County Commissioners and the Clear Spring District Historical Association also had to sign the deed change.

Claudia Marie Mills, 66, of Boyd Road in Clear Spring, Md., went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at her home. Born April 1, 1947, in Hagerstown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Clyde Irvin and Thelma Bowers Mills. She was a 1965 graduate of Clear Spring High School, and was employed for more than 25 years by Country Deli.  She enjoyed shopping, attending flea markets, traveling to Ocean City, and especially spending time with her grandchildren.  She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Robert E. Mills Jr. of Clear Spring; one daughter, Melissa Mills; one son, Thomas Edward Mills and wife, Joy; sisters, Wilma Corder, Millie Smith and Stella Trumpower; brothers, Jesse Mills, Grailing Mills, Mike Irvin, Sam Irvin and Clyde Irvin Jr.; special sisters-in-law, Ida Jean Guildford, Judy Moser, Teresa McCusker and Larie Ann Mills; and grandchildren, Tanner Mills, Conner Mills, Delanie Mills, Kelsey Rhodes, Rylee Rhodes and Chloe Rhodes.

The Rev. Larry Edward Yost Sr., 67, of Hagerstown went to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013. Born July 3, 1946, in Big Spring, Md., he was the son of the late Charles Raymond Yost and Rosie Viola Mills Yost.   Larry was the loving husband of Sandra (Sandy) A. Lynch Yost for 46 wonderful years. Larry was a 1964 graduate of Clear Spring High School. He was assistant pastor at Trinity Christian Church in Clear Spring for 25 years and attended Virginia Avenue Church of God in Hagerstown.

LAURINBURG, N.C. - Miranda D. Kearney of Clear Spring, a freshman at St. Andrew's University, was named to the dean's list for the spring semester. In addition, Kearney was named most outstanding player on the Lady Knights Division II women's soccer team. Miranda is a 2012 graduate of Clear Spring High School. She is the daughter of Kevin and Diane Kearney of Clear Spring.  Keith D. Hartman II, an alumnus of Antietam Bible College, was recently awarded a Ph.D. in church history and  historical theology from North-West University.

Richard Lee McPherson, 53, of 14428 Mercersburg Road in Clear Spring passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at his home. Born Feb. 2, 1960, in Washington County, he was the son of Darlene Reigel McPherson of Clear Spring and the late Richard Lee McPherson Sr., who died in 2009. Richard attended New Life Christian Ministries in Hagerstown and Clear Spring High School. He was the owner of RLM & Son Carpentry in Clear Spring. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on computers and taking photos of his grandchildren.

Corey Adam Clopein, 25, of 15807 Shinham Road in Hagerstown, Md., passed away suddenly Thursday, July 25, 2013. He was born Jan. 4, 1988, to Teresa Lynn Zukowski of Hagerstown and James Anthony Clopein of Hagerstown. He also is survived by his stepmother, Beth Snider Clopein of Hagerstown. Corey was a 2006 graduate of Clear Spring High School and was a self-employed free-lance photographer. He was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed art, painting, photography, playing cards and riding motorcycles.

Daniel Joseph "Joe" Yetter, 81, of Clear Spring, Md., passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, after a courageous 41-year battle with cancer.  Born Oct. 9, 1931, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Daniel Emmanuel Yetter and Margaret "Wolf" Yetter. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Phyllis Malcolm Yetter of Clear Spring. Joe was of the Protestant faith and a graduate of Clear Spring High School. In early years, he worked with the family business of Daniel E. Yetter Masonry.
