Class Reunion

The Boonsboro High School Class of 1947 recently held its 59th anniversary reunion. Thirteen members were present. Marian (Rohrer) Smith, Kathleen (Lum) Rudisill, Bettie (Reeder) Hull, Catherine (Reese) Newcomer, Charles Smith, Joseph Downs, Woodrow Shifler, Nancy (Hammond) Murfin, Allen Nicodemus, Janice Ridenour Kendle, James Reeder, Darce (Haller) Phillips, and Paul Wyand.

The Boonsboro High School Class of 1966 held its 46th class reunion picnic May 19 in  Shafer Park in Boonsboro. The reunion drew 25 class members, plus their guests.  The class plans to hold a picnic on an annual basis. The reunion committee included Carolyn Albert-Aycoth, Nancy Grove-Foltz, Jeannie Gonzalez, Kay Summers-Churchey, Joyce Webb-Stottlemyer, Dick Toms, Rick Morrison, Gary Kaetzel, Marvin Lescalleet and David Shaffer. The South Hagerstown High School class of 1959 will hold it 50-year class reunion Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Elks Lodge in Hagerstown. The event will start with a social hour at 5 p.m., dinner will be served at 6 and the dance will be from 7:30 to 10:30. The Smithsburg High School class of 1949 held its 60-year class reunion Aug. 15 at the Parlor House in Waynesboro, Pa. The class had 27 people in attendance with 11 graduates on hand. Leslie Leathers traveled the greatest distance from Broomfield, Colo. The class enjoyed fellowship and the music of Jack and Donna Haines, who performed hits from the 1940s and '50s. The class had 38 students who graduated. Fifteen classmates are deceased. The class recognized those who are deceased.

Boonsboro Girl Scout troops 40169 and 40708 signed, filled and buried a time capsule May 28 at Greenbrier Elementary School. The capsule is filled with letters the girls wrote to themselves, patches, a 100th anniversary Girl Scout flag, empty Girl Scout Tagalong cookie box and other mementos from the girls. The girls voted to bury the capsule for 10 years. Many of the girls will be in high school or college when it is reopened. The troop leaders, Fran Gabianelli, Shawn Bryce and Jen Keller, would like to thank Principal Jennifer Scarberry-Price and past Principal Beth Allshouse for allowing the girls to have their meetings at the school and for allowing them to bury the capsule.

Boy Scout Troop 23 in Funkstown more than doubled in size the first year. The troop started with six boys a year ago and now has 15 members. The Scouts have completed more than 200 hours of community service, and 10 boys have advanced in rank and earned 35 merit badges. The troop earned the title of honor unit at summer camp, the Gold Level Journey to Excellence award and the Founder Unit award, and the patrols earned the National Honor Patrol award. Scoutmaster Rich Gaver, an Eagle Scout, is proud of the unit and the things it has accomplished.

The Country Western Dance Association will offer line dance lessons Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 7 to 8 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, at the corner of Virginia Avenue and Halfway Boulevard. The classes are open to the public. The classes will last for 10 weeks and cost $5 per class. Burhans Blvd. Hagerstown, will host the Trains of Christmas program Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. The event will feature the visions, sounds and snows of Christmas past and present on an “O” gauge railroad the trains of Lionel, MTH, Williams, Weaver and others.

Auditions for "High School Reunion: The Musical," will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan 5, 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, and 7 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Apollo Civic Theatre, 128 E. Martin St., Martinsburg. Roles are available for 10 men and seven women, ages mid-30s to late 50s. The show will be staged Fridays through Sundays, March 8 to 10, and March 15 to 17. The show centers around the class reunion at Lincroft High where everyone you ever loved, hated, had a crush on, or wanted to punch in the face will be there.

The staff at Winter Street Elementary School will hold a “McTeacher” Night Thursday, Sept. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the McDonald's restaurant on Dual Highway in Hagerstown.   A portion of the proceeds from the food sold during that time will be donated to the school. Parents, friends and neighbors are invited to attend. The more food the teachers sell while working, the more money the school will raise.  The event will be dine in or carry-out only. Winter Street Elementary PTA plans pizza sale The Winter Street Elementary School PTA will sell Little Caesar's Pizza Kits as a fundraiser to benefit the students.

The Clear Spring High School Class of 1957 will hold its 55th class reunion Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Clear Spring American Legion building starting at 5 p.m. All class members and spouses are invited to attend. Several teachers and former principals will also attend. A buffet-style dinner will be served. 'Courageous' to be shown Hilltop Christian Fellowship will show the movie “Courageous” Friday, Sept.

The senior center at Girls Inc. will hold Bring a Friend Day on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Those 55 and older are invited to attend Wednesday classes that day at the center, at 626 Washington Ave. in Hagerstown. The schedule includes: • 9 a.m. - Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, newspaper and socializing • 10 to 11:30 a.m. - Line dancing • 10 to 11 a.m. - Group piano • 10 a.m. to noon - Painting class • 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. - Cards/dominoes • 11 a.m. to noon - “Walk Away Pounds” • 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. - Bead class • 1 to 2 p.m. - Chair yoga • There will also be a tribute to Conway Twitty with Kevin Booth from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Lunch will be served at noon.

Sharpsburg Elementary will hold back to school nights Monday, Aug. 20, at 5:30 p.m. for grades prekindergarten, kindergarten, grade one and grade two.  On Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 5:30 p.m., sessions are designated for grades three, four and five.  Principal Ryan Hench and PTA members will hold brief presentations followed by 20-minute rotations for parents to visit classrooms. The event will conclude by 6:45 p.m.  Ruritan to hold Fairplay Days District 12 Ruritan, at the corner of Manor Church and Breathedsville roads, will hold Fairplay Days Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The event includes jousting, a car show, food and vendors.  The bluegrass band Stoney Creek will perform Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m.  For more information, call 301-582-1005.

Yard sale buffs and bargain hunters are encouraged to participate in a two-day sale Friday and Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church.  Indoor or outdoor tables cost $10 each.
