Pastry for a 9-inch pie (two crusts) 3/4 cup sugar 1/3 cup flour 1 teaspoon cinnamon Dash salt 3 cups pared, sliced Cortland apples 3 cups pared, sliced McIntosh apples 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1/2 cup raisins 2 tablespoons margarine Heat oven to 425 degrees. Mix sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Gently mix with sliced apples. Fold in walnuts and raisins. Put into pastry-lined pan, dot with margarine. Top with crust, seal, and make slits.

For the syrup: 1 cup sugar 2 cups water 3 tablespoons butter 1/4 teaspoons cinnamon For the dumplings: 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon butter 3 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup shortening 4 tablespoons cold water 8 Golden Delicious apples Preheat oven to 450 degrees. To make the syrup, mix the sugar, water, butter and cinnamon in a large pot and bring to a boil. Boil for 3 minutes. For the dumplings, mix together the sugar, cinnamon and butter and set aside.

It's winter. Time to try new ideas for getting vegetables in your children. I know what parents go through to get kids to eat vegetables. I was a kid once, and I hated finding vegetables I didn't like hidden in my food. I love pizza, but if a pizza had onions visible on it, I didn't eat it. If beef stew had green beans or peas in it, I plucked them out. Mushrooms in my soup? No way. Now I'm older and my tastes have matured, and I find many vegetables delicious. Still, there are times when I don't have time to chop veggies for a big salad or cook up a soup or stew.

For topping: Combine flour, sugar and cinnamon with pastry blender or fork.

4 cups fresh or frozen blueberries 1 cup orange juice 2/3 cup sugar (or more, to taste) 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon or allspice 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 pint of half-and-half Garnish of mint sprigs (optional) Dollops of plain yogurt (optional) Stirring often, bring blueberries, juice, sugar, cinnamon or allspice, and salt to a boil over medium-high heat. Remove from heat once it reaches boil and let cool for 15 minutes. Process mixture of lemon juice and the berry mixture in a blender or food processor until smooth, stopping to scrape the sides.

Grease two bread loaf pans. In a large bowl, beat the eggs until foamy. Stir in the sugar, zucchini, oil and vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and ground cloves.

Grease and flour 10-inch tube pan. Soak raisins in hot water while mixing remaining ingredients.

On a cookie sheet, toast almonds in the oven for 10 minutes.
