The Hagerstown 10 Cineplex has closed, according to a posting on the theater's Web site. The brief notice does not give a reason for the closure. It simply states, "Unfortunately, we have had to close our doors. " Chains were looped around the theater's door handles Friday evening and movie posters on the front wall had been removed. Hagerstown 10 owner Alan Ackerman could not be reached for comment Friday. Ackerman has owned the theater since May 2006. Calls to American Family Entertainment, a company Ackerman co-owns, were not returned.

Ticket sales for the Hagerstown 10 Cineplex can be an inconsistent source of revenue, so the owner is trying to diversify services with video game tournaments, concerts, holiday celebrations, battles of the bands, flea markets, comedy acts and roller derbies. Alan Ackerman is banking on the offerings financing his plans for the physical property, which include installing a custom-built drive-in screen next year, opening a cafe, and establishing private viewing suites with hostess service.

LEITERSBURG - The Hagerstown 10 Cineplex will reopen Nov. 16, according to the theater's owners and new manager. Baltimore-based Diamond Cinemas on Tuesday signed a 10-year lease to operate the theater, said Ira Miller, the company's president. The theater has been closed for about two weeks. Its previous manager, Alan Ackerman, left after he was unable to meet the terms of his lease, according to theater co-owner Philip Ridenour. Ackerman did not give a reason for his departure, but had said he found it hard to compete against the Regal Valley Mall Stadium 16 theaters.

Women motorcyclists gathered in May to help raise money for Women Build, which has constructed houses for Habitat for Humanity in Washington County. The 88-mile ride through the county started at the Hagerstown 10 Cineplex on Leitersburg Pike and ended with a picnic dinner at Washington County Regional Park. Gidget Gallahan, who organized the ride, said the number of women riding motorcyles is growing rapidly. Some male riders were also on hand to offer their support for the project.

If Hagerstown were overrun with zombies, Hagerstown 10 Cineplex is the last place you'd want to be, indie filmmaker Gary Ugarek said. There's no where to run, no one to hear you scream. You can see where this is going. Ugarek, a zombie movie fan, couldn't pass up the premise for his latest flick, "Deadlands 2: Trapped. " The film will premiere at Hagerstown 10 Cineplex on Saturday. Ugarek said the theater will show the movie Friday, Oct. 31, through Thursday, Nov. 6. Ugarek, who lives in Montgomery County, Md., filmed the bulk of "Deadlands 2" at Hagerstown 10 Cineplex, though other scenes were filmed in parts of Maryland and Virginia.

HAGERSTOWN Drive-in movies on Leitersburg Pike north of Hagerstown will be revived next week as promised, but not quite as planned. For a while, Alan Ackerman, president of Hagerstown 10 Cineplex, expected to reopen the old drive-in screen June 9. The first show would have been the animated "Cars," on the day of its release. This month, Ackerman learned that the underground lines supplying electricity to the drive-in projection booth need to be replaced, setting his plan back several weeks.
