On Saturday, a group of hikers and bicyclists will be hiking or riding to raise funds for the Hagerstown Area Religious Council and its work in the community. The hikers will meet at 6 a.m. at Hagerstown Church of the Brethren for the hike that starts at Gambrill State Park at 6:30 a.m. The bikers will meet and start at 8 a.m. at Williamsport High School. Bicyclists have the option of riding 20 miles or 37 miles on the Hanging Rock Loop and hikers can hike 15 or 27 miles on the Catoctin Trail.

Beginning at 5:10 a.m. on March 26 at Pen Mar Park and finishing at 9:50 p.m. in Harpers Ferry, W.Va., the Rev. Ed Poling hiked across Maryland, completing more than 40 miles of the Appalachian Trail in 17 hours.  Poling, pastor of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, had fellow hikers to keep him company part of the way, some of whom hiked the entire 40 miles and others hiked a leg of the journey or nearly half the distance.  The hike wasn't...

Helen Mae Faith, 74, of Clear Spring, went to be with her Lord Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, Md. Born July 5, 1937, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Helen Viola Reeder Robinson of Mercersburg, Pa., and the late Melvin E. Robinson. Helen was a lifetime member of Mount Tabor Lutheran Church, where she served on the church council and frequently supported the needs of the church and the members in any capacity. She was a 1955 graduate of James Buchannan High School in Mercersburg, where she and her twin sister were very athletic on the basketball team.

Church acquires two buildings By KIMBERLY YAKOWSKI / Staff Writer Just a few months ago the backyard of 124 E. Franklin St. in Hagerstown was littered with sheets of metal, fencing, piles of lumber, rusted lawn chairs other objects that were hard to identify. Now the debris is gone, thanks to the new owner, Otterbein United Methodist Church of 108 E. Franklin St. Otterbein recently purchased 124 and 126 E. Franklin St., as a way of reaching out to help its ailing community, said the Rev. Stephen D. Robison.

Eileen L. Taylor, 86, of 16505 Virginia Ave., Williamsport, Md., died Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at Homewood at Williamsport. Born Oct. 9, 1924, in Hagerstown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Hazel Keller. She was preceded in death by her husband, Palmer J. (Whitey) Taylor, on Sept. 9, 1993. Eileen retired in 1987 from Sears after 29 years of service. She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, where she was on the church choir, Church Council, taught Sunday school class and served as youth leader.

OCT. 14, 1934-DEC. 10, 2009 FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Jane D. Tolbert, 75, of Fayetteville, passed away Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at Chambersburg Hospital. Born Oct. 14, 1934, in Hagerstown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Glenn and Louise (Strock) Sealock. She was married to Ralph Tolbert for 56 years, a member of the St. Paul Lutheran church, where she was formerly a member of the church council. She was a member of the Hagerstown High School marching band. Jane was a homemaker and enjoyed listening to gospel music and especially enjoyed watching the Gather videos.

FEB. 2, 1929-OCT. 15, 2009 Joseph Austin Johnson Jr., 80, of Hagerstown, Md., died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at Washington County Hospital. Born Feb. 2, 1929, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of the late Margaret Lum Johnson. He graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army. He was employed by Pangborn Corp. for 45 years, as a senior order analyst. He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church since 1941, the chancel choir for 63 years, the church council, the Crossroads Sunday School Class, and he and his wife were the communion stewards of the church for 30 years.

Joseph H. Dulebohn, 81, of 13945 Locust Level Road, Greencastle, Pa., passed away at 7:35 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011, at the Chambersburg Hospital with his loving family by his side. Born Oct. 14, 1930, in Welsh Run, Pa., he was the son of the late Isaac and Carrie (Hege) Dulebohn. Joe was a lifelong farmer. He married Betty Sue (Forsyth) Dulebohn on July 21, 1962, in Hagerstown. He was a lifelong member of the Mount Tabor Lutheran Church of Fairview, Md., where he served on the church council.

NOV. 20, 1927-JUNE 2, 2009 Charles George Henneberger, 81, of 13222 Marsh Pike, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at his home. Born Sunday, Nov. 20, 1927, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late John L. Henneberger and the late Edna M. Harshman Henneberger. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Jane Henneberger, in 2007. He was employed with Ewing Oil Co. for 16 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Free Lutheran Church in Leitersburg, Md., where he served on the church council.

Born July 15, 1929, in Little Cove, Pa., he was the son of the late Herman F. and Etta Mae (Zimmerman) Zimmerman. John was a dairy farmer for 40-plus years in Little Cove, and he also was a construction worker and mechanic for C. Wm. Hetzer Co. of Hagerstown, Md., for 16 years. He was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church of Little Cove, where he served on the church cemetery board and was a former church council member.

Tom K. Fox, 91, of Greencastle, Pa., died Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at 9:05 a.m. in the nursing center of Menno Haven, Chambersburg, Pa. Born July 8, 1922, in Washington Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Roy L. and Nellie E. (Koons) Fox. He married Mary Elizabeth (Goetz) Fox on May 1, 1942, in Hagerstown, Md. She died Nov. 5, 2000. Tom was a 1940 graduate of Greencastle High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving with the 106th Infantry Division during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge.

Otterbein United Methodist Church member Gary Wright was aware of the good works another congregation performed with its emergency response trailer and wanted his church to pursue a similar program. Little did he know that within half a year and at less than $100 cost to his church's council, his $12,000 project of assembling a trailer would become a reality. “You make the thing and hope that you never have to use it,” Wright, 61, of Hagerstown, said Monday. The Rev. Stephen Robison, Otterbein's pastor, said Wright “spearheaded a task force to look at the trailer and equipment cost and offering training.” Wright found inspiration in his brother, Cliff Wright, who served as a member of an emergency response team from Mount Nebo United Methodist Church in Boonsboro.

Chester R. “Chet” Talhelm, age 86, of Molly Pitcher Highway South, Chambersburg, Pa., died unexpectedly at 5:43 a.m. Friday, March 15, 2013, at Chambersburg Hospital. Born May 22, 1926, in Antrim Township, Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late Roy J. and Leah Gail (Ryder) Talhelm. He married Dorothy L. “Dot” (Daugherty) Talhelm on May 1, 1966. Chet first worked for the former Miller and Friedly Co. and then Myers and Fitz, both of Greencastle. He retired after more than 40 years of employment with Antrim Building and Farm Supply of Greencastle.

Josef Foch "Chris" Bikle, 94, of Old National Pike in Boonsboro, Md., passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at the Village at Robinwood in Hagerstown, Md. Born Sept. 4, 1918, at the family home in the Greensburg area of Smithsburg, Md., he was the son of the late Christian Immanuel and Anna Mabel Honodel Bikle. Josef was a 1936 graduate of Smithsburg High School and also graduated from Eastern University's Maryland School of Accounting in Baltimore. During World War II, Josef served in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 18th Regiment, First Infantry Division.

Raymond Gregory Lee Overcash, 65, of 54 W. Walter Ave., Greencastle, Pa., died unexpectedly early Sunday, March 11, 2012, at his home. Born March 22, 1946, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Raymond “Diz” and Florence Louella (College) Overcash. He retired in April 2006 after 41 years service with Mack Trucks of Hagerstown. Greg was a 1964 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School, and a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. Greg was an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served on church council and on the property committee.
