heatherk@herald-mail.com HAGERSTOWN - It cost Art Rosenkoetter $350 in gas to drive from Arkansas towing his trailer, a sum that amounts to almost two weeks' pay at the construction job for which he will be paid minimum wage. But he doesn't mind. "We work for the Lord," said Frank Granger, another worker on the job. "He pays really well. " Granger, 68, of New Mexico, and Rosenkoetter, 58, a retired mechanical engineer, are two of the six members of the St. Louis-based Laborers for Christ who have taken up residence in the muddy backyard of Concordia Lutheran Church at 17906 Garden Lane, off Oak Ridge Drive.

marlob@herald-mail.com BOONSBORO - For Austin Fowler, going to the Spiritual Life Center at Benevola United Methodist Church after school is a treat. "I get to play cool stuff and then we eat," the 7-year-old said. The "cool stuff" Austin talked about is part of Fit Kids 4 Christ, a monthly exercise and recreation program at the church that is woven in a subtle religious framework. Held the second Thursday of the month from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., the event recently attracted more than two dozen elementary-age children who exploded through the doors of the full-sized gymnasium at the recently expanded church on Benevola Church Road.

WAYNESBORO, PA. By RICHARD F. BELISLE waynesboro@herald-mail.com WAYNESBORO, PA. - When Neville West sees the Crucifixion, he sees a cleaned-up Savior, an image that leaves out the blood, violence and horror of the way Christ was put to death. West, 72, of Waynesboro, saw actor-director Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion of the Christ," "When I saw the movie, I saw what Christ endured in the flesh as it really happened," West said. "It moved me. " The crucifixion scene in the movie inspired him to paint a realistic version of Christ on the cross, how it would have looked in real life, he said.

By GEORGE MICHAEL | March 29, 2013
A great affirmation will be heard in many churches this Sunday around the world with the saying, “He is risen!” with congregants responding, “He is risen indeed!” Christians will be celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from his tomb outside the city of Jerusalem almost 2,000 years ago.  Many churches will be crowded. Some leaders joke privately about “CE” (Christmas and Easter) Christians that show up twice a year. Others in declining congregations can at least expect to see some friends they have not seen for a while.
